Centre of Gravity – Single weights

1) Clarify the term centre of gravity.

2) With the aid of simple diagrams, explain how the vessel’s centre of gravity is affected by the
following:

i) cargo being loaded on deck to port and above G

ii) cargo being discharged from a centreline double bottom tank
iii) bunkers already onboard moved from port to starboard

3) Identify the formulae used to calculate the shift in G for these scenarios and explain why the formulae
can only be used for single weight shifts.

4) a Vessel has an initial displacement of 12400 tonnes. She is floating upright in saltwater and has a
KG of 7.4m. She has 500t of fuel in a double bottom tank 3m to port of the centreline at kg 1.2m

Calculate the new KG for the vessel if:

i) The fuel is moved to another tank at kg 6.8m. {7.626m}

ii) The fuel is moved 6m transversely to the starboard tank at kg 1.2m. {7.400m}
iii) Another 500t of fuel is loaded into the starboard tank 3m from the CL at kg 1.2m. {7.160m}
iv) The fuel currently in the tank is discharged. {7.661m}

5) a Vessel box shaped vessel of LBP = 95m & 20m is currently floating at even keel with a draft of 5.6m
needs to load heavy machinery in the port of Durban (RD 1.025). The vessel currently has a KG of
4.85m and the machinery, weighing 980t needs to be loaded in the engine room upper deck at kg 10.6
on the centreline.

Calculate:

i) The displacement of the ship. {10906t}

ii) The safety of this load if her KM is 5.30m. {UNSAFE, as the GM will be -0.024m}

6) a Vessel currently has a GM of 0.75m and her KM is 10.0m. The vessel has a displacement of 10200t,
and a ballast tank currently filled with water weighing 820t at kg 2.1m will be emptied.

Calculate:

i) the final KG for the vessel {9.875m}

ii) the amount of fuel to load into another tank (kg 2.1m) to raise the GM back up to 0.50m. {475.41t}
