COOLANT
Engine oil, gear oil, transmission oil, radiator
coolant and brake fluid are regularly checked by
the vehicles’ owners once a month or whenever
they send their vehicles for services. These oils are
always being changed accordingly due to the
awareness of the owners and the requirement to
change is clearly stated in the service manual.
Under normal operating condition, it is important
to keep the engine’s temperature stable under all
driving conditions and weather.
There are three major important cooling
components in the engine to ensure that the engine
operating temperature is stable under all driving
conditions; which are the engine oil, radiator
coolant and fan.

If any of these components is malfunctioned, it can
cause the engine to overheat extremely fast,
leading to the mechanical breakdown in the engine
parts and causing the engine to cease.
While engine oil is considered as the lifeblood of
the vehicle, radiator coolant acts as the lubricant
that helps to dissipate and remove the heat from
the engine. Coolant is mixed at the right
proportionate of water in a vehicle radiator. It
helps to prevent the water mixture from freezing
or boiling at an extreme temperature it is exposed
to. Considering the amount of heat energy
generated by burning petrol within an internal
combustion engine is between 19 and 20,000
BTUs per gallon, the engine’s cooling system is
greatly relied on to ensure the car functions
properly.
In general, vehicle owner knows the importance of
coolant in the radiator. However, not many
owners exactly know the correct coolant to use as
well as the correct application.
In many years, pure water is being used as the
coolant for radiator. Even though pure water can
transfer heat better from the engine, water alone
does not content additional performing additives to
protect components in the radiator and engine
from rust and corrosion.

It is also not entirely adequate to keep the cooling
system in the engine stable and cool. The boiling
point of water is 100 deg Celcius. At high
temperature inside the engine, the water would
boil it off and eventually, water in the system
would entirely evaporate. This can create a lot of
hot bubbles in the system. It can then cause the
water pump to expose to cavitation problem which
can cause leakages in the system, for long term
operation.
Typically, coolant is made of glycol, water, anti-
rust, anti-corrosion, carboxylate etc. It is generally
a half-and-half mixture of a form of glycol and
water. The glycol represents the antifreeze element
of the mix, guaranteeing that the fluid doesn't turn
into ice under harsh winter conditions. Glycol also
prevents the coolant from reaching the boiling
point in extreme heat. It keeps engine temperatures
stable under all extreme climates and driving
conditions.
Coolant can be categorized into three different
types which are: -

CAT
Converted Acidic Technology
Traditionally green and mostly used in older
engines especially those made from the cast iron
engine block. Shorter lifespan which is less than
2 years.

HOAT
Hybrid Organic Acidic Technology
Lasts more than 3 years. Several manufacturers
are using HOAT for their vehicles.
Usually in orange and yellow colors.
OAT
Organic Acidic Technology
Latest coolant technology.
Protects all types of metal and lasts more than 3
years. It is widely used and accepted by all OEM
especially for their cooling systems and engines
that are made of aluminum and others.
Mostly found in green, blue, pink, red and orange
colors.
PETRONAS coolant is the OAT type which is
developed with the latest coolant technology. It is
specially formulated with ethelyene glycol to
effectively dispel heat from engine hence prevent
from overheating. It will also prevent deposit
formation and corrosion from the engines cooling
system.
It is free from amine, borax and silicate and make
it suitable to be used in all types of vehicles such
as Japanese, European and Malaysia cars. There

and also premix form. For concentrated, it is
advised to mix with 40-60 ratio of coolant and
water in order to get effective heat dissipation and
excellent stable engine operating temperature at all
driving conditions.
For OAT type PETRONAS pre-mixed coolant
which is Premix Coolant, it is produced to give a
peace of mind for the user to directly apply and
use the coolant without worrying about the exact
mixture. The user just needs to pour this coolant
into the radiator whenever needed.
