Unit V

BASIC RULES, VIOLATIONS AND TERMINOLOGIES

A. Basic Rules
Rules in Serving:

• The Server should make the service further than the end line up to the end of the free zone but
within the borders of the service area

• The server should release the ball first before actually hitting it

• The server should release the ball from the moment of the 1st referee’s whistle.

• The server should not step on the end line during service.

• A served ball may touch the net then drop to the other side of the net.

• A served ball over the “neutral area” on top of the net may not be spiked or blocked.

Rules in Volleying/Passing:

• Each team is permitted to a maximum of three (3 hits (In addition to the blocking contact) to
return the ball over the net.

• All players are allowed to hit the ball only once at one time. There shall be no (2) successive
contacts.

• The ball may be touched by any part of the body except the palm.

• A player is not allowed to take support from a teammate or any structure in order to achieve the
ball inside the territory zone.

Rules in Spiking/Attacking

• A back row players may spike or attack the ball provided that he/she takes off from his/her zone
(Back zone) only.

• A player cannot spike a served ball.

• A front row player could end an attack from his/her zone close to the net.

• A front row player could also make an attack coming from the back zone.

• A player is not allowed to touch the net while spiking.


Rules in Blocking

• A player may use 1 or both hands to block.

• A player is not allowed to touch the white strap of the net during his/her action of blocking.

• A player cannot block a served ball.

• A player is not allowed to reach over for the block to the opponent’s vertical space over the net.

Rules Centerline and Net:

• No one is allowed to touch the net during the course of his/her action such as spike, block and
set.

• No one is allowed to go through under the net to cross the centerline resulting to interference
on the opponent.

• A player is allowed to touch the rope or any object beyond the span of the net granting he/she
does not obstruct with the opponent’s action.

Interruption of the game: - exceeding 4 hours;

• If the game continued on the same playing court – the interrupted set shall continue normally
with the same score, players, time-outs, substitutions and player positions.

• If resumed on a different venue – the intermittent set is abandoned, thus player from the start.

• If interruption exceeds four (4) hours, records of the contest are back to zero (0).

B. Violations of Competition
During the Service:

• Ball not served after eight (8) seconds.

• Served ball hit the antennae or posts.

• Server step on the end line on the moment of the service (Stepping the line)

• Not being able to hit the ball

• Tossing or releasing the ball and catching it again.

• Net ball

• Collective screening
• Assisted hit

• Served ball strikes any entity outside the arena.

• Illegal shifting.

Penalty – team fault loses the rally, opposing team earns an advantage and the position to serve.

During the Rally:

• Double contact (2 successive hits) or (double)

• Four Touches (4 hits)

• Assisted hit

• Caught or held ball (holding)

• Ball does not go over the net

• Invading (center line)

• Attacking/spiking a served ball

• Ball lands outside the contender’s court (outside)

• Touching the white band

• Back row player spikes the ball from the front zone while the ball is above the superior part of
the net.

• Overreaching

• Blocking a served ball

• Back row players block the ball

• Ball hits the antennae

Penalty – team fault loses the rally, opposing team earns an advantage and the position to serve.
C. OFFICIAL SANCTIONS

Verbal Warning- Attention of the player is called, cautioned properly and the Game continues

Yellow Card- Attention of the player is called, penalty, game continues

Red Card- Attention of the player is called, expulsion (player must be replaced and can’t play for the
whole remaining game) penalty, game continues.

Both Red and Yellow Cards – Attention of the player is called, disqualification (player can’t play anymore
for the whole tournament) penalty, game continues.

VOLLEYBALL TERMINOLOGIES

Ace/Service Ace The Ball is served to the other team and no one touches it or fails to return it.

Assist Passing the ball to a teammate who attacks the ball for a point.

Attack The Offensive deed of hitting the ball. The endeavor by one team to finish the
play by striking the ball to the ground on the opponent’s wall.

Block A shifty play by one or more players meant to prevent a spiked ball back to the
attacking team’s court.

Bump pass The way to receive the ball is by utilizing the arms in an extended forearm
technique.

Change court The team “changes in/court” every after each set. In the 5th set, after one got a
score (8) points

Collective block 2 or 3 players’ merging, making a block action to intercept the opponent’s
attack.

Collective Screen 2 or 3 players hide a teammate’s serving action.

Default A team does not show up from a scheduled match.

Dig A player dives to receive a very complicated spike.

Dink The act of softly tapping the ball with the palm or fist over the net.

Double Consecutive strike by the same player. (Illegal)


Contact/Double hit
Exceptional Granted to a group when an injured player cannot be replaced officially
Substitution anymore.

Forfeited A team fails to continue the game.

Free ball/ Chance A ball that will be returned by a pass rather than a spike.

Ground Rules Rules not found in the manuscript but agreed upon by all teams.

Held ball The act of catching the ball.

Interval An occasion between sets (1st – 5th), (3) minutes each.

Kill An assault that fallout in an abrupt point or side out.

Offensive The team is about to assault or spike, the side which has the ball.

Power Tip A ball that is pushed with strength by an aggressive team.

Quick The striker is close to the setter for a quick inside slap.

Rally The manner of both teams kept the ball alive throughout the competition.

Receive The way of stopping the ball from a serve, an attack, or a method in which the
ball is returned by a challenger.

Replacement A method wherein the libero takes the slot of an active team member at the
back zone of the arena.

Wipe When a spiker pushes the ball off the opposing block so it lands out of the
limits.
