POVERTY IN INDIA

Poverty is not having enough material possessions or

income for a person's needs. Poverty may include
social, economic, and political elements. India has 73
million people living in extreme poverty which makes
up 5.5% of its total population.

PROBLEMS FACED BY THE POOR PEOPLE-

1. HOUSING-Houselessness, overcrowding, slums and
rental laws are serious problems in rural areas. The
family’s dwelling unit and the neighbourhood within
which it is located are important elements in the
problems associated with poverty. The houses of the
poor are not only over-crowded but also lack
privacy. They are also weak and quite dangerous to live
in, as they might collapse any time.

2. LACK OF CLEAN DRINKING WATER-Water scarcity

in India is an ongoing water crisis in India that affects
nearly 600 million people each year. The poor does not
have have easy access to the freshwater and have to walk
kilometres to fetch water from towns and cities. They are
also not able to afford the water containers sold by
private companies.
3. SANITATION FACILITIES- The people below the poverty
line lived in rural areas where the sanitation were poor.
Poor sanitation leads to spread of diseases like diarrhoea,
cholera etc. Not only children but also many adults are
affected.

4. LACK OF EDUCATION FACILITIES-The children of the

poor families are not able to get good education due to
their financial problems and the government schools
which are quite affordable by the poor, do not fulfill the
need of education. The schools in rural India have really
poor infrastructure. There is a huge lack of teachers,
especially well-trained ones which disturbs the student-
teacher ratio extensively. This leads to very poor quality
of education being imparted, hardly fulfilling the need of
education.

5. SOCIAL DISCRIMINATION- In our society, poor people

face various problems like social discrimination, social
condemnation, social prejudice etc. Rich people and
government of our country look down upon the poor as
they are considered inefficient and a burden on the
society.
If we want to eliminate poverty from India then not
only the government, we all should stand together
and help the poor and eliminate poverty from the
country.
