Theoretical Models

Kindly submit one(chosen) theoretical model.

The Health Belief Model from Kegel, Hoecbaum & Rosenstock stated that this model can be a guide
when it comes to health promotion and disease prevention which is usually practice in community. This
explains that individual changes or indicate their actions and behaviors based on its main components.

 Perceived susceptibility- individuals perceived threat to sickness

 Perceived severity- individuals perceived threat or negative implications when they acquire the
disease
 Perceived benefits- individuals perceived potential positive benefits of action
 Perceived barriers- individuals perceived barriers or circumstances/situations when they make an
action
 Cues to action- factors that prompt action
 Self-efficacy- confidence in ability to succeed (if the behavior desirable appeared; outcome or
evaluation)

Why and How will you apply this theory in your CHN 2 activities.

I can apply this theory in CHN 2 activities because it’s a mere fact that individuals in community and their
health is influenced on their beliefs, cultural practices, traditions that may influence their belief in a
particular disease. This is where information dissemination and credible knowledge plays a key role in
order for them to guide them in promoting their health and prevention in disease. For example, there were
many programs in health advocating to minimize the disease occurrence like hypertension in adults and
malnutrition for younger clients. The way on how they perceived the disease in its context of susceptibility,
severity, barriers and benefits will influence their health behaviors this is when I can assess as a nurse
where factor or components in the health belief should be modified in order to modify their behavior. This
model is also relevant for COVID-19 pandemic since most of individuals still not perceived it as a disease
influencing their behavior in it.
