and will guide nursing interventions
 Human response to illness (actual or risk)
- drug therapy may only be a small part of
the total pt picture
- or, at times it may be an all consuming
factor in the patient's life
 Drug therapy is incorporated into the total
picture
MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS

alterations in structure and function, and
this results in the diagnosis of a disease
or disorder that impairs normal
physiologic function.
- medical diagnosis also tends to remain
unchanged throughout the illness,
whereas nursing diagnoses may vary,
depending on the patient’s state of
recovery.
Concepts that help to distinguish a nursing
diagnosis from a medical diagnosis include the
following:
1. Conditions described by nursing diagnoses
can be accurately identified by nursing
assessment methods.
2. Nursing treatments or methods of risk-
factor reduction can resolve the condition
described by a nursing diagnosis.
3. Nurses assume accountability for
outcomes within the scope of nursing
practice.
4. Nurses assume responsibility for the
research required to clearly identify the
defining characteristics and causative factors
of conditions described by nursing
diagnoses.
5. Nurses engage in improving methods of
treatment and treatment outcomes for
conditions described by nursing diagnoses.
