TRAVEL PLANNING
All the panoramic roads are signposted. The selected
routes lead over the most beautiful roads, which are of-
ten narrow and winding, so be sure to drive slowly and
very carefully. At certain road sections, you may have to
reverse your car if you encounter a vehicle coming from
the opposite direction in order to let it pass.
The best time to travel is between May and October. In
the other months, you should check the weather condi-
tions and road closures in advance. After heavy rainfall,
there may be rockfall on the roads in the mountain re-
gions. Here you should drive extra carefully!

Note that the weather conditions and temperatures on
the coast and in the continental part of the country may
vary. Make sure to bring clothing appropriate for all

“The Crown of Montenegro” will take you to the
highlights of the central region and the north. You
will cross mountain passes at altitudes of up to
1,900 metres. Mighty mountain tops, many of them
more than 2,000 metres high, will rise in front of
you. You will pass through deep gorges and fabu-
lous valleys. You will be surprised how many differ-
ent landscapes you can cross in such a short time, as
if the small country of Montenegro were an entire
continent. This route shows you the unique nature of
the country and explains why Montenegro is called
“Wild Beauty”.
This longest of the panoramic roads
starts in Podgorica. As this is a
round trip, you can join the road
at any location along the route,
but it is worthwhile to begin
with a visit to the capital city.

The route leads through the
valley of the River Zeta via
Danilovgrad to Nikšić. You S ta

should definitely plan a short side- in Komovi Moun
trip to the Ostrog Monastery, which is
stunningly carved into the steep cliffs. From Nikšić,
a narrow road ascends to Vučje, a small winter sports
resort, and to the Krnovo Plateau (Krnovsko Polje). In
the far west of the country, you will reach Piva Nature
Park and Plužine. This town was relocated in 1975 to
its present location, when Lake Piva (Pivsko Jezero) was
formed by the construction of a hydroelectric dam. At
that time, Piva Monastery was relocated too; it is now
situated along the Nikšić-Plužine road. The route fol-
lows the shore of the lake to the dam at Mratinje and
further on to Šćepan Polje. Not far from there it is worth
making a side-trip to visit some medieval tombstones
called “Stećci” (UNESCO World Heritage).
The panoramic road continues to the plateau of Mount
Piva (Pivska Planina) and finally reaches Durmitor Na-
tional Park. The stretch through the Durmitor moun-
tain range to Sedlo Pass is certainly one of the most im-
pressive road sections on this route. It overlaps with the
Durmitor Ring as far as Žabljak (see right). This small
town is the tourist centre of the region. A turn across
the vast plain leads past two lakes and to further sites of
“Stećci” (UNESCO World Heritage). Not far from the
small village of Pošćenje is the Nevidio Canyon. Con-
tinuing along the route, you reach Šavnik.
After a few kilometres you will pass Podmalin-
sko Monastery. There is very little traffic
on the section between Boan and Mios-
ka. The road uphill to the next pass is
narrow and winding. The views of the
surroundings and the Morača Moun-
tains (Moračke Planine) are unique.

Tara. After Mojkovac the valley gets deeper
and deeper and the cliffs even steeper. The Tara
Canyon is the deepest gorge in Europe and is a paradise
for rafting. The road continues northwards across the
famous Đurđevića Tara Bridge to Pljevlja.
The gently rounded hills in this region are the back-
drop for the famous meanders of the River Ćehotina
(Meandri Ćehotine) and they are characteristic of this
part of the country. The route now passes through these
hills until Plav. Your way will take you through the Lim
Valley. You can leave this valley several times in order to
make attractive side-trips to Bijelo Polje, Petnjica and
Rožaje. After passing through Berane and Andrijevica
you will reach Plav and its beautiful lake (Plavsko Jeze-
ro). From here it is not far to Gusinje, the gateway to
Prokletije National Park.
After returning to Andrijevica the panoramic road
turns towards the Komovi mountain range, passes
through Mateševo and once again leads to Kolašin. The
last stage of the journey brings another highlight: your
return to Podgorica takes you through the
magnificent Morača Canyon,, past the an-
cient Morača Monastery.

Driving the Durmitor Ring is the best way to discov-
er the majestic Durmitor mountain range in only one
day. The route runs through Durmitor National Park
and Piva Nature Park. One highlight of the tour is
the vista of the deepest gorge in Europe: the Tara
Canyon.
From Žabljak you can quickly reach Durmitor National
Park. Don’t miss Crno Jezero (Black Lake).
Durmitor National Park was established in 1952 and is
listed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. It
covers an area of 32,500 hectares.
We recommend a short detour from the Ring – an ex-
cursion to Ćurevac (1,625 m). The view of the Tara
Canyon from this place is breath-taking.
The panoramic road now ascends along the
slopes of Štuoc to an altitude of 1,952 metres.
This is not only the highest spot of the Durmi-
tor Ring, but also the highest point in Mon-
tenegro that can be reached by a paved road.
The route leads from there along the edge of the
Tara Canyon. This is the deepest gorge in Eu-
rope and it is said to be the second deepest in the
s world after the Grand Canyon. You will soon reach

the village of Mala Crna Gora (“Little Montenegro”).
The Sušica Canyon, 15 kilometres long and up to 700
metres deep, is another jewel of the Durmitor Ring. At
the bottom of the valley, lined by mighty black pines, is
Lake Sušica (Sušičko Jezero), which dries up complete-
ly during the summer months.

mountain range. As many as 48 of
its mountain peaks are higher than 2,000 metres – the
highest among them is Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m).
The panorama is constantly changing in this area and
always offers new vistas of the imposing moun-
tain peaks. Among the most fascinating ones are
Prutaš (2,393 m) and the sharp ridge of Sedlena
Greda (2,227 m) – the “Saddle of the Gods”, as it
is called here.
A selfie on the Sedlo should be part of every tour
over the Durmitor Ring. The 1,907 metre-high
mountain pass is a popular viewpoint with a view over
the surrounding lakes and the peak of Šljeme. Before
ending in the town centre of Žabljak, the route leads
around the southern and eastern slopes of Savin Kuk
(2,313 m).

This panoramic road runs along the coastal moun-
tains of Montenegro. Discover the spectacular coast
of the Adriatic Sea, the Bay of Kotor, Lake Skadar
and Cetinje, the historical heart and soul of this
country. The Mediterranean joy of life and cultural
diversity will accompany you on this journey. Count-
less photo opportunities await you.
The route starts in Herceg Novi, the first town on the
Boka Kotorska. The old town and the well-preserved
fortifications testify to the turbulent past and the Otto-
man, Venetian, Spanish and Austrian influences in the
course of history. The spa resort of Igalo belongs to the
same municipality.
The Bay of Kotor is considered to be the southernmost
fjord of Europe and it is listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Small towns and settlements are lined up
along its shore. The route first leads through Risan, the
oldest town in the Boka. Its Roman mosaics from the
second century are well worth a visit. Perast with its
numerous palaces and churches and two islands just
off the coast, St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks
(Gospa od Škrpjela), is also very picturesque. An-
other highlight is Kotor, an ancient town with high
ramparts, the San Giovanni Fortress and narrow al-
leyways. The last stop on the bay is Tivat. Here you
can enjoy the exclusive ambience of Porto Montenegro.

up to the village of Njeguši and Lovćen National Park.
From the plateau of Njegoš’s Mausoleum on the summit
of Jezerski Vrh almost all of Montenegro is visible.
Cetinje is the old royal capital of Montenegro. Many
cultural treasures and historical buildings can be found
there. Now you can decide whether to follow the route
further back towards the coast to Budva or to take
the alternative route (3B) via Rijeka Crnojevića
instead. This small place was once a significant
commercial centre and the most important set-
tlement on Lake Skadar.
Between Budva , with its lovely old town, and
Petrovac you travel along the well-known
“Jadranska Magistrala”, the Adriatic Highway.
One of the most popular spots for taking pho-
tos awaits you here: the unique island of Sveti
Stefan. Along this stretch of land there are nu-
merous beaches, where you can enjoy the crys-
tal-clear water of the Adriatic Sea. Behind Petrovac,

The two routes meet again in Virpazar. This small town
is the gateway to Lake Skadar National Park, which is
best explored by boat. From here, the panoramic road
becomes narrow and winding. Above
the lake, it passes through the
villages of Godinje and Os-
tros and continues towards
the Albanian border. Over

lake, its islands, small
fishing settlements and
the mountains on the
horizon.

enjoy not only Ulcinj and its old
town, but also a walk along a 13-kilometre-long sandy
beach (Velika Plaža), an excursion to the river is-
land of Ada Bojana and a visit to Ulcinj Salina
Nature Park.
Back on the coastal highway, the last stage of the
route leads to Bar. Take the opportunity to visit
Old Bar (Stari Bar) and the Old Olive Tree, which
is more than 2,000 years old. And if you are up

ing the view of both shores of the Municipality of Bar:
the Adriatic coast and the shores of Lake Skadar.
Tips
• The alternative connecting routes 3B and 3C ena-

Budva, Cetinje, Bar or Ulcinj.
• The connecting routes 3A and 3D
provide connection with Panoram-
ic Roads 1 and 4.

Jezerski Vrh - Lovćen National Park
THE CIRCUIT AROUND KORITA

This route is perfect for a day trip from Podgorica
and an ideal option to cool down on a hot summer
day. The Circuit around Korita leads uphill into the
mountains of Kuči, up to an altitude of 1,400 metres.
Don’t miss the easy hike to the scenic viewpoint of
“Grlo Sokolovo” (Falcon’s Gorge) with an unforget-
table view of the Cijevna Canyon and the Prokletije
mountain range.
The route begins in Podgorica, the capital city of Mon-
tenegro. If you have not had the opportunity to stay
here, we recommend a short visit. The panoramic road
leads from the city east, uphill to Medun. Your first stop
should be at the viewpoint next to the Monument of
Novak Milošev.
In the village of Medun it is worth-
while visiting the Museum of
Marko Miljanov and the
remnants of the Medun
Fortress. Even from far
away you can see its
walls on an imposing
outcrop of rock. This
medieval fortress was
built on an Illyrian for-
tification from the fourth
century B.C. It is one of
the oldest buildings of this
nyo
n near Delaj type in the region.
The panoramic road continues uphill,
through the villages of Ubli and Orahovo. As the vege-
tation changes along the route, the landscape constant-
ly appears in a new look. At an altitude of around 1,400
metres, you reach the plateau of Kučka Korita.
Korita is situated at the foot of Mount Hum Orahovski
and it is surrounded by numerous mountain peaks. The
4.8-kilometre-long hike to Grlo Sokolovo (“Falcon’s
Gorge”) should not be missed under any circumstanc-
es. The view from the lookout into the more-than-a-
thousand-metre-deep Cijevna Canyon, and on the
2,500-metre-high peaks of the Prokletije mountain
range, is an absolute highlight of this panoramic road
and one of the most spectacular
panoramas of Montenegro. You
should plan at least 1½ hours
for this hiking tour.
The winding road now de-
scends through the villages of
Zatrijebač, with their charac- M e du n
teristic stone walls. Most inhab-
itants of this area live from agriculture
and cattle husbandry. It is worth taking a break in the
village of Delaj next to the big cross, from where you
will have a magnificent view of the gorge and the emer-
ald-green water of the River Cijevna.
There is another lookout point with a view of the
Cijevna Canyon in the village of Stjepovo. It can
be reached via a short walking trail (only 5-min-
ute walk). During the drive through the villages of
Rudine and Fundina, again and again new views
open up towards the landscape. Just beside the road
is Kuk Ledinski – another viewpoint, located on a
small rock, with an impressive panorama.
We recommend a detour from this panoramic road to
Rašovići as a nice conclusion to this route. There you
will find a remarkable white obelisk, which was erect-
ed as a monument in memory of the Battle of Fundi-
na. The view from that spot extends over Lake Skadar,
along the coastal mountain range and towards the capi-
tal city. When you are back in Podgorica after the “Cir-
cuit around Korita”, you will feel as if you have been in
another world.

direction.

campervans, but even if you have a small campervan,

it is recommendable that you have some experi-
ence driving on narrow mountain roads. All
routes are passable for campervans with a
length of up to 6 metres, a width of up
to 2 metres, a height of up to 2.60 metres
and a weight of up to 5 tons. You should
always pay attention to size and weight re-
strictions.

Moreover, you should observe the following

recommendations concerning the routes:

high). The Plužine–Šćepan Polje, Pišče–Žabljak,
Andrijevica–Kolašin and Petnjica–Rožaje sections
should be driven along particularly carefully.
Contrary to our general recommendation, the
“Durmitor Ring” should be driven clockwise (this
does not apply to small campervans). The route is
not recommended for campervans

Heights”, the road sections
along the shore of Lake Ska-
dar and the alternative routes
3B and 3C are not suitable for
large campervans (more than 7 me-

tines should be driven particularly carefully.
The “Circuit around Korita” is not suitable for
campervans more than 7 metres long and 2.30 me-
tres wide.
