 1. Case study
• Research methodology → investigates a
phenomenon in its real-life context; attempts to
show exactly what happened in a particular situation
• Case:
– an event
– a problem

➢ Multiple sources of data
– a single person ➢ In-depth understanding
– several people of the case
– a community

• E.g.: Topic: New methods in Second Language
Teaching

Case study:
- examine real situations
- apply theoretical aspects
- collect data
- make interpretations
Exercise 1
 2. Literature review
• Sections of a paper in which the writer
summarises relevant published works on the
topic
• Literature: the collected body of scholarly works
related to a topic
• Research papers are likely to contain a literature
review as one of its parts
• In a research paper, you use the literature as a
foundation and as support for a new insight that
you contribute

- Synthesise the information in that literature into a
summary
- Analyse critically the information gathered by identifying
gaps in current knowledge; by showing limitations of
