Lesson Plan 5.

2
(Day 3)

Unit 5: Energy in Transportation

Topic: Going Places
Time Allotment: 3 days

I. OBJECTIVES

General:
Demonstrate understanding of the concepts of force and motion as applied to land
and air/sea transport.

Specific:
1. Calculate the speed of an object given the time and the distance it travels.
2. Compare the speed of man, animals and the different types of
transportation.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Lesson Title: Speed

B. References: SEDP Science & Technology IV

Science & Technology IV for Better Life

C. Materials: Stopwatch, handkerchief for signaling the start of the run, meter
stick

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Review/Motivation
1. Recall the previous day’s activity..

B. Lesson Proper
1. Ask students to compare the speed of man, animals and machines using
the table below. If your class performed Activity 5.2.2, ask them to
compare their own speeds to animals and machines.
Ask questions such as:
How fast is the car compared to racehorse?

Unit 5 – Energy in Transportation Lesson Plan 5.2 –Speed 5-13

Table 5.2.3

2. Collect the previous day’s assignment and discuss the solutions.

C. Generalization
1. Summarize the concepts and ideas discussed in Lessons 5.1 and 5.2

Unit 5 – Energy in Transportation Lesson Plan 5.2 –Speed 5-14

IV. ASSESSMENT

Table 5.2.4

For numbers 1 to 3, refer to Table 5.2.4

1. How do you compute the average speed of each vehicle?

a. Multiply distance by time of travel.
b. Divide time of travel by distance traveled.
c. Divide distance traveled and time of travel
d. Add distance traveled and time of travel

2. Compare the speed of the bus and the jeepney. The bus is
a. one-fourth as fast
b. half- as fast
c. eight-tenths as fast
d.five-fourths as fast

3. Which of the three vehicles is the fastest? Explain.

4. A bus traveled 30 km in 30 minutes and the next 20 km in 10 minutes.

What is the average speed of the bus?
