Lesson 5.

3
(Day 2)

Unit 5 : Energy in Transportation

Topic Title : Describing Motion
Time Frame: 2 days

I. OBJECTIVES

General:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the concepts of force and motion as applied to
land and air/sea transport.
2. Demonstrate skills in making representation of concepts, plotting data and
interpreting graphs.

Specific:
1. Differentiate average speed and instantaneous speed.
2. Determine average speed and average velocity given distance and time data.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Lesson Title: Speed and Velocity

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Review
1. Review the difference between distance and displacement; speed and
velocity.

B. Discussion (continuation from the previous day)

1. Discuss the answers of the other questions on the Worksheet which were not
discussed in the previous meeting.
2. Emphasize the difference between average speed and instantaneous speed.
Give examples.

C. Generalization
1. Let the students generalize the concepts that they learned in the two days’
lesson through the guide questions below.

Unit 5. Energy in Transportation Lesson Plan 5.3 – Speed and Velocity 5-20
A. Guide Questions B. Concepts

1. How do you know that a body is 1. Motion occurs when there is a change of
moving? position with respect to a reference
point.

2. What is the difference between 2. Distance, a scalar quantity, is the

distance and displacement? length of path that a moving body
travels. It is commonly expressed in
meter, kilometer, centimeter, feet.
Displacement, a vector quantity, is the
shortest distance between the initial
position and final position. Examples
of displacement are 5 km, east; 100 m
NE.

3. How do you determine average 3. Average speed can be determined by

speed? dividing the total distance traveled by
the total time of travel.
total distance traveled
Ave. speed = total time of travel

The most common units of speed are

m/s, km/h, mi/h and ft/s .
4. Differentiate speed and velocity. 4. Speed is the ratio of the distance
traveled to the total time elapsed while
velocity of a body is the ratio of the
displacement to the total time elapsed.
Speed is a scalar quantity while velocity
is a vector quantity.
5. Differentiate average speed and 5. Average speed refers that to the total
instantaneous speed. distance divided by the total time
interval while instantaneous speed
refers to the speed at a particular instant
(very short time interval).

6. How do you determine 6. The speedometer of vehicles gives the

instantaneous speed? instantaneous speed.

D. Valuing
1. Suppose Angelo’s first period class starts at 7:00 A.M. What time should he
leave his house to reach the school at least ten minutes before the time?
2. It takes time to wait for jeepneys and tricycles. What should you do so that
you will not be late in your class?
3. Transport strikes are very common especially in the cities. Can you give
some immediate effects of these strikes to you as students?

Unit 5. Energy in Transportation Lesson Plan 5.3 – Speed and Velocity 5-21
IV. ASSESSMENT

1. A school bus traveling along a straight road from school was found to be 2.0
km, north of the school 4 minutes later. In another 4 minutes, it was 4 km west
of the school.

a. Draw the positions of the bus from the school.

b. What is the bus’ final displacement from the school?
c. Calculate the total distance traveled and the total time of travel of the bus.
d. Compare the average speed and average velocity of the bus.

V. ASSIGNMENT

1. Make your own map. Indicate the estimated distance and time of travel from the
school canteen to the library. You may take different routes.

2. Write at the lower portion of the map the following:

a. Total distance traveled
b. Net displacement
c. Total time of travel
d. Average speed
e. Average velocity
