1 Introducing SequeLink OLE DB

Edition Client

This chapter introduces SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client and its

components, and provides information about system
requirements.

What is SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client?

DataDirect SequeLink OLE DB Edition provides a single, universal
OLE DB data provider, allowing you to:

■ Access more data, including nonrelational data and

relational data stores

■ Streamline the design and improve the performance of your

OLE DB business applications with a client/server architecture

■ Provide portability for your OLE DB business applications

across multiple data stores
Server
OLE DB calls are sent across your network from SequeLink clients
to the SequeLink Server service, which passes the requests to the
database engine. The database engine processes the requests
and passes the results back to the SequeLink Server service,
which returns them to the client.

For more information about OLE DB concepts, OLE DB

programming samples, and the advantages of using OLE DB,
refer to Getting Started with DataDirect for OLE DB.

users. The installer automatically detects which protocol
stacks are available and installs the corresponding SequeLink
network modules. For example, if the installer detects the
Microsoft SNA Server protocol stack, the SequeLink for
Microsoft SNA Server network module will be installed.
Additionally, the installer automatically installs the
SequeLink OLE DB Provider and the SequeLink CAT.

■ Custom. This installation option is for advanced users only,

and allows you to customize your installation. The installer
will automatically include the SequeLink OLE DB Provider
and the SequeLink CAT. You can select additional SequeLink
components to install, such as the SequeLink OLE DB Data
Source SyncTool Administrator.

5 Establishing a Connection

This chapter provides information about the basic steps you

need to perform to establish a connection after you have
successfully installed SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client.

Before you try to establish a connection, make sure that you

have installed SequeLink Server on a server. On your client, you
must install at least one of the following SequeLink clients:

■ SequeLink ODBC Edition Client. For information about

installing SequeLink ODBC Edition Client, see Chapter 3,
“Installing SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client.”

■ SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client. For information about

installing the SequeLink OLE DB Provider, refer to the
SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client Installation Guide.

■ SequeLink Java Edition Client. For information about

installing the SequeLink Java Edition Client, refer to the
SequeLink Java Edition Client Installation Guide.

To establish a connection:
1 Make sure that your SequeLink Server service and database is
running.

After installing SequeLink Server, your SequeLink Server

service should be running and ready to accept connection
requests from SequeLink clients. If you are unsure whether a
particular service is running, contact your system
administrator.

If you are unsure whether your database is running, contact

your database administrator.

SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client Installation Guide

46 Chapter 5 Establishing a Connection

2 Using a SequeLink client, test the connection to your

SequeLink Server service:

■ If using the SequeLink ODBC Driver: On a SequeLink client,

use the SequeLink CAT to create a data source and test a
connection with your SequeLink Server service. For
information about using the SequeLink CAT to test
connections, refer to the SequeLink Administrator’s Guide.

■ If using the SequeLink OLE DB Provider: On a SequeLink

client, use the SequeLink CAT to create a data source and
test a connection with your SequeLink Server service. For
information about using the SequeLink CAT to test
connections, refer to the SequeLink Administrator’s Guide.

■ If using the SequeLink JDBC Driver: On a SequeLink client,

use JDBCTest to test the connection with your SequeLink
Server service. For information about using JDBCTest to
test connections, refer to the SequeLink JDBC Driver
Reference.

3 If the connection test was successful, you can start using

SequeLink with your applications.

SequeLink can be used by any ODBC-, OLE DB-, and JDBC-

compliant application. For more information about:

■ Using SequeLink with ODBC applications, refer to the

SequeLink ODBC Driver Reference for Windows 3.1x or the
SequeLink ODBC Driver Reference for Windows 9x,
Windows NT, UNIX, and Macintosh.

■ Using SequeLink with OLE DB applications, refer to the

SequeLink OLE DB Provider Reference.

■ Using SequeLink with JDBC applications, refer to the

SequeLink JDBC Driver Reference.
