Toggle mechanism
Simple toggle consists of two links which tend to line-up in a straight line at one point in
their motion. The mechanical advantage of the simple toggle above is the velocity ratio of
the input point A to the output point B.
tan A
FB x v
Mechanical advantage =
FA y vB
As α => 90o, CA & AB come in to toggle
Used in punch presses, riveting machines,
stone crush
Toggle mechanism available in mechanism lab.
Lab Objective
• To calculate and measure the output forces at different angle and different set of
weights.
• To describe the experiments using the calculated and measured forces
• To describe the mechanical advantage when the angle (𝛼) is increasing
The components in the toggle joint apparatus are clearly shown in the diagram below.
Using the rules of statics, the forces can be determined using the force diagram.
❖ 𝜶 = lever opening angle [°]
❖ 𝐅𝐆 = Pendulum weight load [N]
❖ 𝐅 = Spring balance [N]
Table 1: Calculated force F [N]
Angle 𝜶 [°]
𝐅𝐆 [N] 30 60 90 120 150 160

Table 2: Measured Value F [N]
Angle 𝜶 [°]

NB: Measured Force F = displayed value – intrinsic weight portion
Intrinsic weight portions of the system noted for the selected angle are:
▪ 30° = 0.5 N ▪ 90° = 2.0 N ▪ 150° = 9.5 N
▪ 60° = 1.0 N ▪ 120° = 4.0 N ▪ 160° = 14.5 N
