EXPERIMENT NO.

MILLER INDICES
AIM: To determine: (i) Direct lattice intercepts,
(ii) Miller Indices,
(iii)Inter planar distance for various planes of cubic system.

APPARATUS: Cubic System crystal models, i.e. (i) Simple Cubic Crystal (SCC)
(ii)Body centered cubic (BCC) & (iii) Face centered cubic (FCC).

PROCEDURE: Determination of Miller Indices:

1. The miller indices for a particular crystal plane are determined in the
following way:
2. Find intercepts of the plane on the three co-ordinate axes say p, q, r.
3. Take reciprocals of p, q, r & then take L.C.M to reduce them to smallest
integer as h, k, l such that
1 1 1
h:k:l= : :
𝑝 𝑞 𝑟

Result is then enclosed in parenthesis (h k l)

Concerned plane will have miller indices (h k l)

Example- For a plane whose intercepts are 2, 3, 4 along x, y, z axes

1. Plane intercepts – 2, 3, 4
1 1 1
2. Reciprocal - : :
2 3 4

h: k: l = 1 : 1 : 1
2 3 4
3. Take L.C.M

h:k:l= 6 :4 : 3
12 12 12
or h : k : l = 6:4:3

Hence miller indices of above plane is (6 4 3).

CONCLUSION:
Various parameters like direct lattice intercept, miller indices & inter planar
distance for SCC, BCC, and FCC system are studied and tabulated in the
observation table.
