a) Explain the advantages and the limitations of non-conventional energy
8 L1 CO1
sources.
Q1 b) Explain Tar Sands and Oil Shales as energy sources and mention their 8 L1 CO2
limitations.
c) With a schematic representation, explain the mechanism of absorption, 4 L1 CO3
scattering, beam, and diffuse radiation on earth’s surface.
OR
a) Elaborate on India’s production and reserves of commercial energy 8 L1 CO2
sources.
Q2 b) List down the major solar radiation measuring instruments. Explain the 8 L1 CO3
working of Pyranometer with a sketch.
c) Write a short note on spectral distribution of extra-terrestrial radiation by 4 L1 CO3
clearly differentiating the regions.

PART-B
a) Define: i) Latitude, ii) Declination angle, iii) Hour Angle, iv) Surface 10 CO3
azimuth angle, v) Zenith angle. L1
b) For New Delhi (latitude 28o35’N, longitude 77o12’ E), calculate the angle
Q3 between the solar beam and normal to the horizontal surface on day X. The 6 CO3
standard IST longitude is 82.5o. (Take X as your day of birth. For example, L2
if DOB is 26.05.2000, take X as 26.05 or 26th May).
c) Calculate the day length day length of location (latitude 22o00’ N,
longitude 73o10’ E) on the day X (take X as defined in question (b)). 4 L2 CO3

OR
a) Name the different types of thermal collection devices. Explain the 10 L1 CO3
working principle of liquid flat plate collectors. Write its advantages and
Q4 disadvantages.
b) What is space cooling and heating? Explain with a neat sketch three
different types of active systems. 10 L1 CO3

CO1: Describe the environmental aspects of non-conventional energy resources. In comparison with
various conventional energy systems, their prospects, and limitations.
CO2: Know the need of renewable energy resources, historical and latest developments.
CO3: Describe the use of solar energy and the various components used in the energy productions with
respect to the applications like – heating, cooling, desalination, power generation, drying, cooking etc.
