4.6.1 Electro Magnetic Induction
Definition: Electromagnetic induction (or sometimes just induction) is a process where a
conductor placed in a changing magnetic field (or a conductor moving through a
stationary magnetic field) causes the production of a voltage across the conductor. This
process of electromagnetic induction, in turn, causes an electrical current - it is said
to induce the current.

 EMF is induced when coil cuts

through magnetic field .

 Emf induced when magnetic field

cuts through coil.

Explaining an experiment (Popular igcse questions)

1. When a magnet is pushed into the solenoid, there is a change in

magnetic field lines linking the solenoid, which produces an induced
e.m.f. This induced e.m.f. drives a current in the circuit, causing the
pointer of the galvanometer deflects momentarily.
2. When the magnet is stationary , there is no change in magnetic field
lines linking the circuit.
3. Induced current (or induced emf) is produced in the coil due to the
changing magnetic field in the solenoid.

Factors affecting the magnitude of an induced E.M.F.

1. speed of coil
2. strength of magnet
3. number of turns in the coil

Flow of induced current

Lenz law states that induced current always flows in a direction which opposes the
motion that produced it.
