ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Tutorial Five: The Human Rights and Participation Principles

Submission and assessment:

(i) Carry out research and investigations in your own time by accessing peer-reviewed articles
that appear on the 2023 DHET approved lists of accredited journals (ISI and / or IBSS), books,
reports and government publications, to develop an in-depth understanding of the Human
Rights and Participatory Principles;

(ii) You then to identify and select one example of an international and / or local NGO / non-
profit organisation / action group that advocates for the Human Rights Principle in relation to
environmental management issues, and similarly at least one example of an international
and / or local NGO / non-profit organisation / action group that promotes the Participation
Principle in relation to environmental management issues. Have a copy of the homepage of
each of your selected organisation’s website ready to discuss with your demonstrator (via the
Whatsapp Tut Group Chat) during the timetabled practical session;

(iii) Discuss your understanding of the Principle, as well as your selected case study, with your
allocated demonstrator and be sure to go through any other queries you may have. Thereafter
you will have a week to complete the worksheet below for submission to your demonstrator
for assessment;

(iv) Please utilize the lecture slides, extra readings, video links, recommended texts and any other
additional material you have been able to access to complete the tutorial worksheet. The aim
is to achieve the tutorial tasks and enhance learning, and less on the assessment and grade;

(v) Although the standard procedure for tutorial completion and submission is on a weekly cycle,
the tutorials will be available for the duration of the course, with reasonable, adaptive
timeframes established for completion. If you miss a deadline we will have a backup deadline,
or if you can’t submit a word document, you can arrange an alternative submission option
with your demonstrator (e.g. a Whatsapp voicenote, or a picture taken of a handwritten
page). COMMUNICATION and COLLABORATION will be key here. Your demonstrator is in
charge, so make an arrangement with them that works for both of you.
