WHAT CAN WE DO TO DECREASE THE ACID RAIN?

Acid rain is one of the most serious environmental issues, it is a result of many factors including
natural (chemical releasing from rotting vegetation and erupting volcanoes) and mainly,
anthropogenic causes (gases produced by cars, power plants and industrial boilers).
There is a various list of harmful effects but mostly the damage affects forests, water bodies and
even human health. The only way to help is reducing the emissions of these gases, such as sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen monoxide. Specifically, we need a decrease of the usage of fossil fuels, a
better control of combustion temperature and looking for ecofriendly alternatives, which results in
the utilization of renewable energy (wind, hydroelectric, etc.). Worldwide, some programs have
been created were countries as China and United States compromise to maintain their emissions
below a certain percentage. These programs must stay active since there are scientific studies that
validate a progress. Some European countries started to restore the damage by neutralizing river
and lake water with powered limestone, but this choice is expensive and temporary. Finally yet
importantly, it is everyone contribution that will also diminish acid rain and many other problems.
We have to reduce the unnecessary use of energy at home, avoid burning trash, promote riding
bicycles, walking or use public transportation, the creation of awareness campaigns and even doing
strikes if needed.
In conclusion, acid rain needs to be reduced as soon as possible and as students with access to
this information we must share it and do our part of this big problem we have before our eyes.
