Workshop Title: The Importance of Digital Security

Workshop Description: Far too often we create online profiles that share our personal
information without considering what implications might follow. This course focuses on the
intersection of one’s digital presence and digital security. Assignments and content are aligned
with GaPSC Instructional Technology Standards.

Workshop Objectives
a. Students will be able to analyze the components of a strong password.
b. Student will be able to create a safe online profile.
c. Students will be able to analyze websites to determine security.

GaPSC Instructional Technology Standards


Citizen. Educators inspire students to positively contribute and responsibly participate in the
digital world. The program shall prepare candidates who:
(iii) Mentor students in the safe, ethical, and legal practice with digital tools and
protection of intellectual rights and property; and
(iv) Model and promote management of personal data and digital identity and protect
student data privacy.

Workshop Activities
This 30-minute workshop focuses on helping instructors better understand how to equip students
with the tools they need to create a safe online presence. Participants in this workshop will gain
practical skills that emphasize the importance of digital security that also empower learners. The
instructor will use Microsoft Teams as the primary way of disseminating information for
participants.

Workshop Assignments: Participants are expected to participate in all activities to receive a


satisfactory grade for professional development credit.
 Introduction, Overview, and Preassessment (5-7 minutes)
 Passwords (7 minutes)
o Determining what makes a weak or strong password
o Making a strong password (Padlet)
 Sharing information online (7 minutes)
o Determining appropriate information to share online?
o Viewing one’s social media profile to determine if they are creating a safe online
presence.
 Identifying secure websites (7 minutes)
 Post-assessment or Survey (3-5 minutes)

Workshop Evaluation (grading components and assessment methods): At the conclusion of the
workshop, students will take a post-assessment or survey to help the instructor determine
mastery of objectives and effectiveness of instructional strategies.

Instructor and Learner Interaction Expectations


Participants are encouraged to be active throughout the duration of the workshop.
Participants may use the chatbox to present inquiries to the instructor or use the raised
hand and microphone feature to share thoughts. Should students have questions or
concerns after the workshop has ended, the instructor may be reached via email at

Academic Honesty
Academic honesty refers to the degree to which students complete activities and assignments
independently. Students may receive assistance in navigating the course and locating work from
the instructor. The expectations of the course include that students make their best attempt on all
of their assignments on their own. Students should avoid plagiarism at all costs.
