Analyzing Acetic Acid in Vinegar
A. Analysis of Vinegar
1. Chemical formula of Acetic Acid (vinegar) CH3COOH
2. Volume of vinegar 25 mL
3. Mass of the vinegar 26.225
Given: Density of vinegar 1.049 g/mL at 25⁰C
4. Molarity of NaOH Solution 1.0 M
Flask 2 Flask 3
Flask 1
SHOW ALL YOUR CALCULATIONS. Label each item by number on the table. For example,
the volume of NaOH in flask 1 , 7F1, in flask 2, 7F2 , in flask 3, 7F3.
Yes, it falls within the standard amount because the mass percent of acetic acid in
vinegar in flask 1, 2 and 3 are 4.992%, 4.985 % and 4.9899% respectively. Whereas 4.992%,
4.985 % and 4.9899% are between 4 and 5 percent standard amount of acetic acid in vinegar.
2. If there were any other acids other than acetic acid present in vinegar, how would this
affect your results? Explain.
If acids other than acetic acid were present in the vinegar, determining the percentage of
acetic acid would be difficult because the mass of acetic acid present in vinegar would be
different, and that is because there is other acid present. Furthermore, the level of acidity
would increase, for there is another acid present other than acetic acid. Other acids in
vinegar, besides acetic acid, may have an effect on the pH value. The pH of a reaction is an
important condition that determines whether or not the reaction occurs.
