This guide will give you some

that you may wish to use, so you
can keep learning and improving!

1. To scale up a photo, place it in the corner
of your paper and draw a diagonal line,
when it hits the edge take a right angle to
the opposite side.

2. For guidelines that are faster than a 'grid'

draw corner to corner, and then right angles
through the centre point, .
3. To draw a straight line without it looking like
you used a ruler, draw dotted lines then join up
freehand, giving a natural, but straight line.

4. Bring your pencil back to a point without

losing a huge amount of graphite and wood by
simply sanding the point on fine sand paper or
'glasspaper'.
5. To check an angle without measurements,
simply place your source photo against one
edge of the paper, lay a pencil along the side
and move it across.

6. Draw things in the direction they grow,

taking advantage of the tapering of the
stroke; this works for hair, fur, grasses and
more..
7. Make paths and rivers lay flat by reducing
the depth, flattening the angles and emphasising
horizontal lines.

8. Use broken lines to indicate the position of

soft edged items like shadows, clouds,
reflections, trees and furry animals.
9. When drawing reflected objects such as
walls, fences, plants and posts remember to
'mirror' the image, not continue the same angle.

10. Use an embossing tool to create any fine

white lines or shapes that are too small to
shade around.
11. To keep things looking natural draw through
objects, not around them. Then erase the part
that goes through the foreground object.

12. Draw an ellipse smoothly from the

shoulder/elbow, keeping the hand and wrist
immobile. This will give a smooth outline.
13. To draw a flower facing in any direction,
draw a many sided 'box' around the shape, find
the centre point and use the outside line as a
guide for petals.

14. To keep tall objects or buildings symetrica,l

take a centre guideline, and check the width at
various points, using further horizontal
guidelines if necessary.
15. To make tall buildings, columns and towers
look even taller, slope the sides in slightly, this is
3 point perspective and will give your buildings
an illusion of height.

16. To find the centre point of an angled wall

simply take lines from corner to corner, then
take an upright guidline through the middle, this
is your centre.
17. Use repeating motifs (objects which are in
reality the same size) to show distance. As
they go away from you they will get smaller,
fainter, and closer together.

18. To draw realistic lips look first at the

centre line(s), once you get this right, the lips
will fit easily around the outside.
19. When drawing eyes never show the full
circle of the iris. The upper lid will cut across
it in reality, getting this right prevents a staring
or surprised look.

20. The way you shade and blend will indicate

the texture of the object. For smooth objects
aim for soft blending and for rough objects
scribbled, visible lines can work well.
