Emergency Section 10.8 shall be provided in high: 36.7.1; 101: 37.7.1) 8.17.1.6 Alarm Attachments — When a fire must be fought internally due to the height of a building, the following additional alarm apparatus shall be provide: (1) Each sprinkler system on each floor shall be equipped with a separate waterflow device. The waterflow device shall be connected to an alarm system in such a manner that operation of one sprinkler will actuate the alarm sjs- tem, and the location of the operated flow device shall be indicated on anannunciatorand /or register. The annuncia- tor or register shall be located at grade level at the normal point of fire department access, at a constantly attended building security control center, or at both locations. (2) Where the location within the protected buildings where supervisory or alarm signals are received is not under con- stant supervision by qualified personnel in the employ of the owner, a connection shall be provided to tansmit a signal to a remote central station, (8) A distinct uouble signal shall be provided to indicate a condition that will impair the satisfactory operation of the sprinkler system. D.1.1.2 Special Structures and High Rise Buildings. D.LL2.1 High-tise buildings shall be protected throughout by an approved, supervised automatic sprinkler system in ac- cordance with NFPA 101, Section 9.7. Asprinkler control valve and a waterflow device shall be provided for each Moor. (65 mm) inlet per every 250 gpm (946 L/min). 7.12.8.1 An approved large diameter hose connection of a size to accommodate the required flow shall be permitted. 7.12.8.2 The inlets required by 7.12.3 shall be permitted to be provided on multiple fire department connections. 7.12.83 The inlets required by 7.12.3 shall be permitted to be located in multiple locations as allowed by the AHJ, 5.6° Very Tall Buildings. 5.6.1 Water Supply Tanks for Very Tall Buildings. 5.6.1.1 Where the primary supply source is a tank, two or more water tanks shall be provided. 5.6.1.1.1 A water tank shall be permitted to be divided into ‘compartments such that the compartments function as individ- ual tanks. 5.6.1.1.2 The total volume of all tanks or compartments shall be sufficient for the full fire protection demand. 5.6.1.1.3 Each individual tank or compartment shall be sized so that at least 50 percent of the fire protection demand is stored with any one compartment or tank out of service. 5.6.1.2 An automatic refill valve shall be provided for each tank or tank compartment. 5.6.1.3 A manual refill valve shall be provided for each tank or tank compartment. 5.6.1.4 Each refill valve shall be sized and arranged to inde- pendently supply the system fire protection demand. 5.6.1.5 The automatic and manual fill valve combination for each tank or tank compartment shall have its own connection to one of the following: (1) Astandpipe riser that is supplied with a backup fire pump (2) Axeliable domestic riser sized to meet the requirements of 5.6.1.4 A.33.317.2 Signaling Zone. A notification zone is the smallest discrete area used for any announcements or signaling. De- pending on the emergency response plan, a signaling zone can encompass several notification zones. For example, in ‘most high MMIII, each single floor (fire area) isa not fication zone. Most emergency response plans call for the sig- naling zone to be the fire floor, floor above, and a floor below. 21.4.2 High Rise Buildings. 214.2.1 All high-rise buildings shall be provided with a rea sonable degree of safety from fire, and such degree of safety shall be accomplished by one of the following means: (1) Installation of a complete, approved, supervised auto- matic sprinkler system in accordance with 9.7.1.1 (1). (2) Installation of an engincered life safety system complying with all of the following: (a) The engineered life safety system shall be developed. by a registered professional engineer experienced in fire and life safety systems design. (b) The life safety system shall be approved by the author ity having jurisdiction and shall be permitted to in- ude any or all of the following systems: i. Partial automatic sprinkler protection ii. Smoke detection alarms iii, Smoke control iv. Compartmentation v. Other approved systems. 28.5.3.2* In high-4i8ebitildings, one elevator shall be provided with a protected power supply and shall be available for use by the fire department in case of emergency. 32.33.9.2 In High Rise)Buildifigs. Class | standpipe systems shall be installed throughout all high-rise buildings. 32.3.6.3.2* In high #8e)buildings, one elevator shall be pro- vided with a protected power supply and shall be available for use by the fire department in case of emergency. In larger buildings, especially high S@BUHRABS, it is recom- mended that all evacuations — whether partial or total — be managed to sequence or control the order in which certain occu- pants are evacuated from their origin areas and to make use of available means of egress. In high-rise buildings, the exit stair, at any level, are designed to accommodate the egress flow of only a very sinall portion of the occupants — from only one or a few stories, and within a relatively short time period — on the order ‘ofa few minutes. In case of a fire, only the immediately affected floor(s) should be given priority use of the means of egress sery- ing thatfloor(s). Other floors should then be given priority use of the means of egress, depending on the anticipated spread of the fire and its combustion products and for the purpose of clearing certain floors to facilitate eventual fire service operations. Typ cally, this means that the one or two floors above and below a fire floor will have secondary priority immediately after the fire floor. Depending on where combustion products move — for ex- ample, upward through a building with cool-weather stack effect — the next priority floors will be the uppermost occupied floors in the buildin; In high-18@)biIARGs, in towers, or in deep underground spaces where travel over considerable vertical distance on stairs can cause persons incapable of such physical effort to collapse before they reach the street exit, stairwaysare permit- ted to be used for initial escape from the immediate area of danger, and elevators are permitted to be used to complete the travel to the street. A.3.3.24 High-RIS@IBGIGHG. It is the intent of this definition that, in determining the level from which the highest oceupi- able floor is to be measured, the enforcing agency should ex- ercise reasonable judgment, including consideration of over- all accessibility to the building by fire department personnel and vehicular equipment. Where a building is situated on a sloping terrain and there is building access on more than one level, the enforcing agency might select the level that provides the most logical and adequate fire department access. (5000, 2012) 1.7.6.3.1.9 For high-i8@)BGHGiRgs, mall buildings, and build- ings containing atriums, the construction documents shall in- clude a description of the fire protection systemsiin the building. ‘This description shall include the basic concepts used for sup- pression, alarm, notification, egress, compartmentation, smoke control, and other related systems, as well as the coordination of these systems. Upon completion of the project, a copy of the approved documentation shall be maintained at the site, 24.29.12. In buildings, other than high SREIBWIIMHRS, that are protected throughout by an approved, supervised automatic sprinkler system in accordance with 243.5, exit enclosures shall have a fire resistance rating of not less than 1 hour, and the fire protection rating of doors shall be not less than 1 hour. 3333 Exit Stair Enclosures. 3333.1.
