Operation of the PURON® MBR Product

PURON® MBR Operation Overview

• The PURON® MBR membrane is a hollow fiber product, operating in
an outside-in direction in a submerged configuration
• For the purpose of clarity, the smallest component of the PURON®
product is the Membrane Row. Modules are constructed of
multiple rows and trains contain multiple modules.
• Permeate is usually extracted using a reversible permeate/backflush
pump
• Over time solids and fouling material accumulate on the membrane
surface. A few techniques are used to maintain long term high
operating flux:
– Air scouring uses coarse air bubbles to help remove solids from the
membrane surface and solids trapped between the fibers
– Backflushing to aid the removal of solids from the membrane surface
– Chemical cleaning to remove absorbed fouling material from the
membrane surface

Basic Operating Modes

Mode Description

Process Permeate is produced using a permeate extraction pump

- Typical process cycle runs for 600 seconds

Backflush Returns a small percentage of the produced permeate

back through the membrane
- Typical backflush cycle runs for 30 seconds

Cleaning Periodic cleaning of the membrane

- Maintenance Clean - backflushing with chemical solution
for a short time (done between once per day and once
per week)
- Recovery Clean - soaking the membranes in chemical
solution for a few hours (done between once to 4 times
per year)

Chemical Cleaning

As membranes produce water, a fouling layer forms on the

membrane surface and the required filtration pressure
(transmembrane) rises. Over time, this fouling layer will not be
effectively removed by normal air scouring and backflush.

Chemical cleaning of the module becomes necessary… Two basic

procedures are used:

• Maintenance Cleaning (MC) – used to maintain the permeability

• Recovery Cleaning (RC) – used to restore the permeability to

original parameters

Chemical Cleaning
Maintenance Cleans (MC)
Automated short cleans performed at a pre-set intervals to
maintain permeability.
• The MC cycle is a low flow, chemically enhanced
backflush, typically 30 minutes in duration
• Typical schedules and concentrations for municipal
applications:
– Sodium hypochlorite @ 125 mg/L is applied from 1/day to
1/week (municipal)

– Citric Acid @ pH of 2.5-3 is applied as needed (municipal)

Chemical Cleaning
Recovery Cleans (RC)
Intensive cleans designed to remove all accumulated
fouling material and restore the membrane permeability to
nearly new membrane condition.
• The membrane tank is drained, flooded with chemical
solution, and allowed to soak for a period of 4-8 hours
• Typical schedules and concentrations for municipal
applications:
– Sodium hypochlorite @ 1,000-1,500 mg/L is applied every 6
months to annually

– Citric Acid @ pH of 2.5-3 is applied as needed
