REFLECTION

The movie entitled “The Unforgivable” depicts a compelling story about family, parole system,
and the challenges an ex-convict faces. The film centers on the story of Ruth Slater, a character
portrayed by Sandra Bullock, who is released from prison after serving twenty years for a crime
of murder. It explores the challenges encountered by individuals as they strive to rebuild their
lives after serving time in prison. It also showcased the circumstances and psychological
challenges associated with parole and how it strains relationship with family as well as other
people. In the story, it can be seen that even though Ruth Slater has been given a privilege to start
anew, it doesn’t change the fact that she is still being denied by people after knowing that she
was once a convict. Her challenges in trying to reconnect with her sister, getting a job, and dealing
with parole rules illustrate the difficulties ex-convicts often face. It also shows the various
conditions imposed on individuals on parole, from curfews to restrictions on where they can live
and who they can associate with. Moreover, the film delves into family dynamics, especially the
strained relationship between Ruth and her sister. It shows how past mistakes can strain family
bonds but also reveals the potential for healing within these relationships. Ruth's journey
highlights the enduring power of family connections, even in tough times. This film also
showcases the sacrificial aspects of sisterly love. It was revealed in the later part that Ruth is not
actually the one who killed the cop, it was her then five years old sister who did it, this shows
how strong her love was for her sister that she is willing to sacrifice twenty years of her life.
Furthermore, despite the challenges and emotional wounds, Katie's willingness to offer support
and understanding to Ruth shows the enduring bond between siblings. It portrays the range of
emotions, from anger and resentment to longing and vulnerability. Ultimately, the movie
highlights the idea that family, and in this case, sisterly love, can be a source of strength and
resilience. It highlights the importance of forgiveness, empathy, and the willingness to give loved
ones another chance. It also points out the necessity for a compassionate and rehabilitative
concept within the context of the criminal justice system, thereby highlighting the significance of
empathy, support, and opportunities for redemption for individuals endeavoring to free
themselves from a constant cycle of criminality.
