REPRODUCTIVE
CLONING

WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?
Reproductive cloning consists of creating a new individual
that is genetically identical to the original. To do this,
researchers remove a mature somatic cell, like a skin cell,
from the animal they wish to copy. Then they transfer the
DNA of the original somatic cell into a egg cell with the
nucleus removed, so there isn’t DNA in it.
The modified ovule is then implanted into the uterus of a
same species female, in which it grows until becoming a
cloned individual genetically the same as the donor of the
nucleus.
WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF REPRODUCTIVE CLONING?
We clone species like the sheep or the dog to study how this method affect them and if
after years of trial and error we could use it for medical transplants and we could even get
specific milk variations.
For example, if we clone a dairy cow that produces high quality milk, we could keep that
quality because the next cows will be genetically the same so it is the same kind of milk.
WHAT ARE THE APPLICATIONS OF REPRODUCTIVE CLONING?
The applications can be seen in the ranching and the agriculture, with the obtention of animals
and plants, like Dolly the sheep (the first cloned mammal).
Some theoretical applications, at least for the moment, involve humans. Some of them are:
-For infertile couples who want to have a genetically identical child
-Parents who lost their child and wish to have another genetically the same.
-People that have to treat a disease and need to obtain a genetically identical tissue from a
cloned fetus or newborn.
PROS
-The medical discoveries that we could find in the future
-The cloned animals can be used like insulin producers
-If you clone one animal, the transplantation between the clone and the real won’t have
rejection from the body so it’s much easier.
-We can clone endangered species so that specie don’t stinguish.
CONS
-Certain abnormalities have been found such as weight gain, malformations, respiratory
problems, kidney abnormalities, etc.
-Cloned children could develop social and psychological problems by being raised in the
shadow of their nuclear donor.
-It isn’t yet fully-developed so it might be dangerous.
-Cloning raises the question of a moral or human right to an exclusive identity.
