LESSON

CUTTING PROCEDURE
INTRODUCTION:

In previous module we have identified the tools need for cutting we also discussed
the different part ang function of cutting equipment, even defying what is oxy-
acetylene and oxy-fuel and named different examples of cutting machine. since we
already have knowledge this module will generalize tin cutting machine we are now
going to develop or enhance our skill by, following the proper procedure in cutting.
This module consists of step by step cutting procedure.

Materials;

40 pcs 1/18x3x6
Oxy-acetylene Cutting equipment
Portable angle grinder
PPE

Procedure:
Measuring
Secure proper physical protective equipment (PPE) before do the cutting task
Using tape measure, start measuring the mild carbon plate,

Cutting Procedure:
*Please see module 1,2,3 for the step by step procedure of setting up the oxy-
acetylene
1. First open the oxygen needle valve all the
way up, the open the acetylene valve a little

2. light the torch with the used of igniter or

busted lighter, you may see the dark color of
smoke coming from the tip of the torch that is
the acetylene the natural gas that burn on the
atmosphere

if no sparker used busted lighter

3. Then slowly open the oxygen needle valve beside

the oxygen valve lever, try to adjust the torch until
you see the little cone

4. Press the oxygen lever to determine if the size of the cone is enough

5. Preheat the metal for a moment, and when you see

the cherry red color on the metal, press the oxygen lever
and drag the torch on the direction of cut. Don’t move it
to fast or to slow because it may affect the cut of metal
Direction and movement of cut:
Moderate movement of torch with correct angle of tip

Too SPEED Movement

Result of TOO FAST MOVEMENT

Cut the mild steel plate into 40 pieces using oxy-acetylene equipment
(usually the typical steel has a standard measure of 21 feet. 21 ft. divided by 40 pcs;
it means that you need to cut 6 inches per every steel to gain the 40 pcs mild steel)

6.After series of cutting, close first the oxygen level, the oxygen needle valve, then
close the oxygen needle, fire out.
7. For safety measure realest the excess oxygen and acetylene gases from connection
host unto the cutting torch by pressing the oxygen lever.
8. Put down the oxy-acetylene torch, then close the oxygen cylinder valve, and lastly
close the acetylene cylinder valve.

Close the oxygen safety close the acetylene safety

valve and regulator valve and regulator

WRAP–UP
SELF-CHECK 3

SETTING UP A CUTTING TORCH

Use the checklist below as basis for judging whether you meet the required
competency. Write YES or NO for your answer in a separate answer sheet.

Performance Indicators YES NO

1. Can secure Oxygen and Acetylene cylinders to the cart or
wall correctly
2.Can remove safety caps and crack cylinder valve properly
3. Can check all part of the damage.
4.Can attach regulators cylinder correctly
5.Can attach flow valves and hoses to the gas’s outlet
6.Can install the cutting tip
7.Can back-up the pressure regulating screw before opening
the cylinder valves
8. Can adjust the regulating screw to satisfy the working
pressure needed
9. Can set-up cutting outfit correctly ready for use.

Note: Have learners assess their performance. For criteria needing assistance, provide
the appropriate intervention/s

VALUING

Aside from correct set up the working pressure in oxy-fuel cutting, why it is necessary
to observed the correct angle torch and speed movement of cutting?
