column size: 9" x 12"

6 pcs of 12 mm bars,

Stirrups dia 8 mm @ 6" C/C

Column size for 2 storey (G+1) Building

Standard column size for 2 storey building
As per the thumb rule, the standard column size for 2-storey building is 9 × 12 inches (228mm × 300mm)
and this is the perfect size for buildings up to the 2 floor/ G+1 floor. For column size of 2-storey buildings
M20 grade concrete, 6 pieces 12mm steel bar whose grade should be Fe500 and T8@6″C/C stirrups used.

Grade -Plinth beam : Size: 9" x 12"

2 pcs of 10/12 mm bars at top (Recommended size 10 mm- Compression part)

4 pcs of 12 mm bars at bottom (Tension part)

Stirrups dia 8 mm @ 6" C/C

RCC cover 1-1.5"

Roof beam: Size: 9" x 12"

 Top Steel – 2 bars of 12 MM

 Crank bars – 2 bars of 12 MM, cranked at an angle of 45° at a distance of L/4 at both ends of a simply supported
beam
 Bottom Steel – 3 bars of 12 MM.

2 pcs of 10 mm bars at top ( Compression part)

2 pcs of 12 mm bars at bottom (Tension part)

Stirrups dia 8 mm @ 6" C/C

RCC cover 1.5"

As a general thumb rule, the standard beam size for a G+1/2-storey residential building is at least 9 × 12 in
inches, or 230 × 300 in mm, or 23× 30 in cm, or 0.23 × 0.30 in meter, or 0.75 × 1 in feet. So for a two storey
building you need 9″× 12″ RCC beam size.

For this general thumb rule, we will assume a structure of G+1 (2 storey) residential building, using standard
9″ thick walls, size of an RCC beam should be 9”x 12” (230mm x 300mm) using 6 nos bar,4 bars of 12mm
Fe500 Steel used at bottom and 2 nos of 10mm Fe 500 used at top with m20 grade of concrete and stirrups
of T8@6″C/C and M20 grade of concrete ratio (1:1.5:3) with clear cover 25mm.

Continuous beam size for 15 foot span:- for continuous beam span to effective depth ratio is 26
(span/effective depth=26), given span 15 foot, effective depth =15 ×12″/26=6.9″, dia of bar=16mm, clear
cover of 1″, so overall depth= effective depth+clear cover +1/2dia of bar = 6.9″+1″+0.3″=7.3″, taking round
figure beam depth=9″. Width of beam = D/1.5=9″/1.5=6″, in general width of beam is taking as 9 inch.

For 15 foot span, size of continuous beam for 2-3 storey residential building, using thumb rule, is about
9″×9″ in which beam width is 9″ and beam depth is 9″ providing with 2nos of 10mm bar at top, 2nos of 12mm
bar at bottom and 2nos of 12mm crank bar of Fe500 with stirrup T8@6″C/C and M20 grade of concrete ratio
(1:1.5:3) with clear cover 25mm. (https://civilsir.com/what-size-beam-do-i-need-for-a-15-foot-span/)
