C. Motivation
I want you to listen carefully to
this song, it may help you
understand our topic easily.

“Do You Wanna Add Some

Fraction”
(To the tune of “Do you Want To
Build a Snowman?” From
Disney’s Frozen)

Do you want to add some

fractions ?
Come on I’ll show you how..
I promise that it’s not so bad.
So don’t be sad..
And please don’t have a cow!
It only takes a few steps..
And then you’re done.
You’re going to feel
So SMART !
Do you want to add some
fractions?
I’ll teach you all the actions..
Time to start!
First step of adding fractions:
Denominators have to match
Just find a common multiple,
Then multiply..
But wait! Here is the catch.
What’s done to the bottom…
Must do to top
To keep all the values the same
Now you can add those fractions,
Or maybe do subtraction.
One more thing
Last step off adding fractions:

Check if it’s heavy on the top.

Improper change to numbers
mixed,
And now it’s fixed.
Its almost time to stop!
Last part of adding fractions
Is to simplify
That habit will always apply!
We just learned to add fractions.
I taught you all the actions.
Now, you try!

Questions :

1.What is the song all about ?

2.According to the song, what is
the first step to add a fraction?
3.

D. Presentation

“Addition of Fraction and

Mixed Numbers

We have 3 types of fractions;

1. Proper Fraction: is a
fraction whose numerator is
smaller than its denominator.
Example: 1 / 2

2. Improper fraction:is a
fraction whose numerator is equal
to or greater than its denominator.
Example : 4 / 3 or 5 / 5

3. Mixed Fraction: is a
fraction composed of a whole
number and a fraction.
Example : 1 1 / 2

In adding fraction,the first thing

we need to know is, if the
fractions are similar and
dissimilar.

Similar Fraction: are fractions

with same denominators.

Disimilar Fractions: are fractions

with different denominators.

In adding Similar Fraction:

Step 1. Add the numerators.
Step 2. Copy their common
denominator.
Step 3. Reduce the answer to its
simplest from if possible.

Example:
3/5 +1/5=4/5

2 / 7 + 5 / 7 = 7 / 7 or 1

In Adding Similar Fraction and

Mixed Number with Same
Denominator:

Step 1. Copy the whole number.

Step 2.Add the numerator
Step 3.Copy their denominator.
Step 4.Reduce the answer to its
simplest form if possible.

Example:
2 4/8+3 2/8 =N

2 4/8+3 2/8 =
6 6 / 8 or 6 3 / 4

3 2/4 + 3/4 = N

3 2/4 + 3/4 =
3 5/4 or 4 1/4

In Adding Fractions and Mixed

Fractions with Different
Denominators.

Step 1.Determine the Least

Common Denominator.
Step 2.Get the equivalent Fraction
using the LCD
Step 3.Add the whole numbers
then the fractional parts.
Step4.Reduce the answer to its
simplest form whenever possible :

Example:
1)1/2 + 1/5 = N

Find the LCD of 2 and 5.

We can get the LCD with the used
of Listing Method to list the
multiples of 2 and 5.

2| 2 4 6 8 10 …
5| 5 10 15 20 …

10 is the LCD

get the equivalent fraction

1(5)/2(5) + 1(2)/5(2)
= 5/10 + 2/10
Now we can add the fraction
because they have now the same
denominator.
5/10 + 2/10 = 7/10

2) 1/2 + 1/4 = N

Find the LCD of 2 and 4.

We can get the LCD with the used
of Listing Method to list the
multiples of 2 and 4.

2| 2 4 6 8 10 …
4| 4 8 12 16 20 …

4 is the LCD

Get the equivalent fraction.

1(2)/2(2)+ 1(1)/4(1) =
2/4+ 1/4 =N

Now we can add the fraction

because they have now the same
denominator.

2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4

3) 5 1/3 + 1 4/5 = N

Find the LCD of 3 and 5.

We can get the LCD with the used
of Listing Method to list the
multiples of 3 and 5.

3| 3 6 9 12 15
5| 5 10 15 20 25

15 is the LCD.

Get the equivalent fraction

5 1(5)/3(5)+ 1 4(3)+ 5(3) =
5 5/15 + 1 12/15 =N

Now we can add the fraction

because they have now the same
denominator.

5 5/15 + 1 12/15 = 6 17/15 .

We must simplify the improper
fraction by dividing the numerator
to denominator.

17/ 15 = 1.2 so
1 is a whole number and the
reminder 2 must be the
numerator. So therefore.

6+1 = 7 2/15

IV. Generalization
1. What are the steps in adding
similar fraction and mixed number
with same denominator?

Step 1. Copy the whole number.

Step 2.Add the numerator
Step 3.Copy their denominator.
Step 4.Reduce the answer to its
simplest form if possible.

2. What are the steps in adding

similar fraction and mixed number
with different denominator.

Step 1.Determine the Least

Common Denominator.
Step 2.Get the equivalent Fraction
using the LCD
Step 3.Add the whole numbers
then the fractional parts.
Step4.Reduce the answer to its
simplest form whenever possible
