SRSGVAC’S BRIEFING TO CHILDREN ONLINE EVENT

AROUND THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL 12th March 2022

CHILD SAFEGUARDING GUIDE 8am New York /

& CODE OF CONDUCT 2pm Geneva / 4pm Nairobi
/ 9pm Manila

What is child safeguarding?

- A child is anyone under the age of 18 years old.

- Organisations who work with children, including all organisations that are hosting this event today,
have a responsibility to make sure that children who participate in their events and activities are
safe from harm. We call this ‘child safeguarding’.

- Unfortunately, online and offline, there is always a risk that children may experience harm. That is
why we are asking all participants in the event today to make a pledge to keep everyone safe
and makes our time together today fun, supportive and inclusive for all children around the world!

- The organisers will remove anyone from the meeting who is not respecting the pledge or acting in
any way that harms children.

- It’s important for you to know that it is not your fault is someone hurts you.
THE PLEDGE FOR PARTICIPANTS IN SRSGVAC’s BRIEFING TO CHILDREN ON 12th MARCH 2022
During the event today, I pledge to :
1. Treat others as you would like to be treated: During the event, through the chat and/or on social media,
please be respectful and friendly. Please do not shout, tease, bully or use any forms of violence or bad language.
2. Treat everyone equally: We are all equal, regardless of race, gender, age, religion, education, cultural
background or anything else. There will be many different opinions and ideas and it is important that we
welcome and celebrate diversity.
3. Use child-friendly language: Try to use simple language and avoid any complicated words and try to speak
slowly. If something is not clear, ask someone to explain it.
4. Listen to others: We want to hear what all participants have to say. Everyone should feel welcomed and
listened to in our shared space. Don’t interrupt.
5. Only participate if I choose to: Participation is voluntary. It is your choice to take part and you can decide not
to join in the discussions at any time. You can also stop talking and answering questions any time you like.
7. Stay safe online: Please do not share any personal information or your passwords with anyone. Please also do
not share photos or information from private conversations with other participants on social media without
approval and telling them what you are going to do with them.
8. If you feel hurt or see another child being hurt, or experience anything that makes you uncomfortable,
please inform us immediately. There are 3 people here today who are responsible for child safeguarding, and you
can message them directly in the chat or send them an email if something bad happens to you or another child
during today’s event:
o Manus de Barra (ORSSGVAC) : debarra@un.org
o Luisa Sotomayor (OSRSGVAC) : luisa.sotomayorvarela@un.org
o Kristen Hope (Tdh) : kristen.hope@tdh.ch
Thank you! Have fun and enjoy yourself!
