TITLE: DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT AN AUTOMATIC

VEGETABLE SLICING MACHINE

Reg No: DTME/0065/2021

ABSTRACT

Automation brought about by technology has saved human effort and time to a larger extent.
Slicing vegetable is a risky and time consuming task in our busy life. Manual cutting of
vegetables is still common in hospitals. This gadget is mainly designed to reduce human effort
and time consumption by using a motor that runs the cutting head. The motor is operated by an
automatic switching circuit that employs the use of infrared sensor that detects an object on its
path hence switching the motor on or off depending on the obstruction along its path of visibility.
This project is aimed to reduce food contamination problem in hospital hospices while handling
vegetables by the hospital staff and also reduce time consumed in preparation of vegetables in
hospital hospices.

INTRODUCTION
In resent time technology advancement has paved way for creation of ultra-modern equipment
that are safe efficient and easy to use. It’s in this respect I have developed this automatic
vegetable slicing machine to be used particularly in industrious settings, such as hospital .This
type of machine will help improve food safety by reducing food contamination, reduce the risk
posed by food handlers using knives and other forms of cutting cutlery .This machine has taken
safety of user to another level by ensuring minimal contact of the cutting head and any electrical
part by the user.

The machine is fully automatic which reduces machine and human interaction .This machine has
tubular, point of insertion used for insertion or placing of vegetables in the machine. The
machine’s cutting head is covered by stainless still to reduce rust.

It reduces the amount of work that is done by many people. Also it saves on time .The use of
simple materials such as stainless steel and locally available component.in this booklet it
highlights the design finding and benefits of this machine.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Hands are the most common vehicle for transmission of infections in hospitals and hands
hygiene is the single most effective means of preventing of cross infection among hospital,
patients and health care personnel. (Michael Muiruri, design and construction of automated
theater light, 2019).

After careful study of indigenous way of slicing vegetable .it is observed that it involves a lot of
physical Labour material wastage, therefore to improve the processing method and enhance its
hygienic level there is need of mechanization of the slicing process .there is another way, as with
other part of the (NHS) switching to digital food safety technology can drive real benefits to
healthcare providers, helping them ensure patient and improve operation at the same time, hence
this automatic vegetable slicing machine is designed to address inadequate training on skilled
staff on food safety(www.food standard agency food hygiene rating scheme.com)

1.4 JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

Having researched in some government facilities such as schools, hospitals and some private
restaurants, most of this facilities faces the challenges of having to slice vegetables manually of
which it’s a risky and unhealthy method of doing it and also tiresome since it requires a lot of
human effort therefore it was important for me to come up with this kind of project build from
locally available materials to ease the reduction of food contamination and exhaustless
experienced by using the manually operative method

EXPECTED RESULTS

 Project put in to consideration basic design concept which will be limited to materials,
stress analysis and for fabrications.
Reg No: DTME/0065/2021

 The IR transmitter is affected by intense light therefore reducing its efficacy.

 The gadget cannot differentiate vegetables from other materials since it chops anything
along its path.
 The garget will be used in hospitals and other food vegetable processing industries
