Synopsis-GLYCERIN

Short Synopsis
Two wannabe filmmaker friends Sunil and Nachiketha (Nachi) decide to make a movie
inspired by Italian neo realism and stories behind how Vittoria De sica pulled out the project
like “Bicycle Thief” finding the local faces to act in his film, also in the live location of Italy, in
a very realistic and independent approach so, both brainstorm for an idea and come up with
the plot line of a poor guy who had just come to Bengaluru from a rural village and has been
intimidated by the busy city is trying to find his livelihood but after various failed attempt to
get a good job only to end up being caught while pickpocketing, both friends decide to shoot
that pickpocket scene in a live location, hiding the cameras to capture the genuine reactions
from the crowd, post which to go with the flow as the live reactions occurred unscripted.

Sunil and Nachi who are now excited about their idea decide to roam around in search of local
faces in and around Majestic, KR Market, JC Road, SP Road, they encounter various faces and
they keep clicking hundreds of images and finally they come across a guy who seemed
interested about their photography and asks them to click few of his pictures, Sunil finds his
actor in him and he decides that “The guy” matches their requirements, they audition him on
spot and on gaining some confidence that he could pull out the performance for the role that
they have planned, they begin to shoot in the live location amid the hustle bustle of the city,
but as they start the process they come across various hurdles, localities begin to see their
activities as a nuisance and question them about the valid permission to shoot it in their
locality, here begins the manipulative game of Sunil, he deceive them by reasoning it’s a small
budget project and couldn’t afford the paper works to get the shoot permission and to suffice
them in return he seeks their help in completion of the shoot involving them in the planned
scenes, Sunil’s manipulative mind beginning from this event eventually starts multiplying as
he encounter more complex challenges over the process of shooting.

Facing every odd hurdles, putting the found actor in very threatening situation only to get a
realistic perfect shot which further on leading into series of misfortunate events, with each
steps taken to achieve very realistic shots two friends push themselves more further to the
edge of questioning one's own moral status, they arrive at the point where they are forced
by situation to take some drastic step which questions their moral values to the core and both
get disturbed by the possible outcome that would cause on them as well as on the subject
they are planning to act on.

Two friends break the fourth wall and start revolting against the actual “Director” and
questions the moral stand on the characters he had designed. Thus, erasing the line of
shooting and bringing in the meta cinema atmosphere for the narrative here on, strong tussle
erupts between actors who play Sunil and Nachi’s character and “The Director” over their
status and responsibility as an actor to just comply to the script and complete the shoot
instead not to question the acts of characters they are playing, turning the entire filmmaking
process into one hell of a chaotic event. As the arguments escalate and both stand their point
reasoning “The Director” takes the spiral journey of self-destruction only to take up the
control over the situation of completing the film.

Genre – Black Humour, Meta cinema

Film Treatment
Film language chose to shoot this project is in a Dogme and Meta cinema style, where the
audience witnesses the characters involved in the process of making films in the very hustle
bustle streets of the town among the crowd with a very guerrilla filmmaking approach.

Character Scape
Sunil - A cinephile and a film making enthusiast, still in a verge of learning cinema, got carried
away by the realistic nature in which many Italian neo realism, dogma 95 movement created
an impression on film making, but in true sense it’s the no availability of sufficient resources
made him incline towards taking up this guerrilla film making approach.

As he gradually fulfils the required resources for the shoot and get started with the shooting
process, he gets so much involved in completing the film that he forgets everything around
him not hesitating to see the societal boundaries and moral lines, eventually bringing things
to the edge of destruction. But at one point he questions himself, if he is truly what he is
seeing himself to be? but then only to realise that he is a mere character designed by the
“actual” director of the ongoing film.

Nachiketa (Nachi) – Nachiketa is a film making enthusiast, Sunil’s best friend, unlike Sunil,
Nachiketa’s understanding of cinema are driven from native film making style and inspirations
and his intuitive strength are more rooted to his experiences from his life, he is more a rational
person and believes in practical implementation of things, he keeps on questioning Sunil’s
drastic moves and tries to put some sense to his absurd ideas but only to be overpowered by
eccentric Sunil.

Market Guy - A Boy who Sunil and Nachiketa find while searching for a local face in and
around the hustle bustle of Bengaluru city, his connection to cinema is only through popular
cinema that see a blockbuster openings and hero worships, he had come to Bengaluru to join
hands with his father to earn a livelihood working in busy KR Market but being snapped by
the glitz and blitz of Bengaluru city he kept doing many odd jobs only to be discovered by two
wannabe film making friends and end up being a pawn in their roller coaster journey.

“The Director” – The actual showrunner behind this bizarre project, Sunil, Nachiketa and
Market guy are his brainchild, he determines the character’s actions and their consequences,
he constantly pushes the ones (Sunil) moral boundaries though always alerting with the
watchdog (Nachiketa) beside him, complete drama is a manifestation of his ego and
hypocrisy, he strongly believe that through cinema he could control the entire masses and
influence their way of living and thoughts, his narcissist behaviour erupts when the Sunil
character questions back breaking the fourth wall and from then on “The Director” takes the
spiral journey of self-destruction, finally getting tangled in the question “is the film which is
just the expression of life, is bigger than the life itself?”
