MOVIE REVIEW PAPER #: 1

Name of Student: Sandra Mae O. Cabueas Date: July 31, 2017

A. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE MOVIE:

DURING THE MOVIE:

1. Who are the most important characters in the movie? Also list the names of the actors
playing these characters.
Preeti Gupta as Leela
Bhavani Lee as Sakhi
Adil Hussain as Devraj
Victor Banerjee as Fareed
Bhanu Uday as Husain
Seema Rahmani as Chandra

2. What is this story about?

The movie is all about a series of life stories of the characters and portrays how each
characters life is interconnected with the rest. The main characters story revolved
around a lesbian Indian woman who decided to live her life as a lesbian instead of
marrying a man as what is practiced in their culture. She fought for her love and ended up
trapped in the judgment of his father and of the society.

3. What group of people would like this movie (demographics)?

The suited audiences are those who prefer a murder-thriller movie over a romantic
comedy.

AFTER THE MOVIE:

1. Did you like this movie? Why or why not?

I personally did not like the movie. It heavily contradicts my beliefs as a Christian.
Movie-wise, the plot did not meet my expectations and the screen presentation is not that
appealing to an audience of my age.

2. What rating would you give this movie?

Id give this movie a 2-out-of-5 rating.

3. What spoilers might ruin the movie for viewers if you told them about it?

In the movie, the lesbian and her lover did not successfully fight for their relationship due
to the formers fathers strong objection.

4. All movies teach a lesson (theme/moral). What did you learn from this one?

I learned that culture is a major determinant as to the degree of acceptance one can get
when it comes to the LGBTQ and the romantic relationship involving them.

5. What title would you give your review

(and can you think of a pun that might work for it)?

Dead Labyrinth

B. SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE MOVIE:

Headline: Unfreedom Wall of Movie Reviews

Critiquing a movie by its title or related movie reviews is likewise comparable to judging
a book by its cover. Thus, it is simple review etiquette to first watch the movie and to give an
informative review after. In this paper, I would express an opinion about the movie entitled
Unfreedom. The movie started rolling chunks of scenes relating to the lives of every character
involved. The volume of the scenes is composed of issues connected to the rise of the LGBT
community and the freedom of expression in a society wherein culture dictates every citizens
preferences. Unfreedom is a production of Dark Frames and directed by Raj Amit Kumar.

The movie is a twist and turns of the seemingly random characters that appear to be
unrelated to one another. The introduction of each role was not given enough time to
continuously build up; instead, it was deliberately cut off by another role in the movie. Id like to
focus on a more prominent sub-storyline about the lesbian Indian woman named Leela who was
forced into an arranged marriage and subsequently chooses to defy the Indian tradition by pining
for her lesbian lover who is a nude artist in New York. They experienced emotional breakdowns
and frustrations with regards to their current situation. It was quite obvious that a lesbian
relationship is a taboo in the Indian culture. They place a high regard on a man-woman married
life. As both of them tried to conquer the roller-coaster highway of Delhi and New York, the end
of their story trapped them in the hands of the defied father. The ethical value of the movie is
encrypted pervasively into the lives of the lesbian lovebirds. They are the face of the modern
reality which the society can either choose to judge as moral or not. As business ethics is an
applied ethics, the contemporary issues are well-concentrated in the areas of the human sexuality
and relationships.

The role played by Preeti Gupta (Leela) is one of those which deserve applause. She
flawlessly delivered her character in the most unexpected manner. As an overall comment on the
entire casts performance, all of them did a great work in putting the characters to life. The only
thing that I disliked about the movie is the screenplay and the plot presentation. It was confusing
for the viewers and it gravely focused on the morbidity of the acts. Apparently, almost every
aspect of the human life was violated as depicted in the multiple-storyline movie. Though the
passion of the director to become creative in the storyline, I would rather stick to a simple
screenplay technique.

Unfreedom is an R-18 movie. It is not suitable for the weak at heart and conscience. As a
general review, the movie is borderline bad. If not for the great performances of the actors, the
movie would turn out to be very disappointing.

Short Biography:

C. REACTION/REFLECTION:

The movie was not appealing to me at all. It triggered me to judge it according to its
screenplay, and it became difficult to trace a particular storyline to make it distinct from another
embedded storyline. The movie made me realize how much I dislike the harsh realities
experienced by those whose fates are unimaginable. There was no clear resolution presented in
the movie.

The following are the new things that I learned from the movie:
Pride and honor should be inferior to human dignity
To have a heart for life is always much better than a brilliant judgmental mind
Rules and traditions can sometimes hinder the very essence of being human
