IDENTIFYING YOURSELF TO A SPECIFIC ACTOR IN THE THREE IDIOTS MOVIE BUILDING AND NIGOTIATING

SELF-IDENTITY IN A SOCIAL CONTEXT

In our group, we commonly agree to choose to identify ourselves in the character of Raju, the second
idiots in the movie because we have seen some of his characteristics to us. Raju, has a
personalitycombinations of being Extroverted, Intuitive, Feeling and Judging (EN). Based from the movie,
he portrayed to be warm, empathetic, responsive and responsible. He is highly attuned to the emotions,
needs, and motivations of others. He finds potential in everyone, wants to help others fulfill their
potentials. He is sociable, facilitates others in a group. These were justified when he is emotionally
moved to Rancho when he rushed his father to the hospital and when Virus rusticated him from college.
He is loyal and responsive when is Director asked him to reveal who he was with the last night.

In terms of building and negotiating Raju's self-identity in a social context he is into the following were
the analysis made: al Raju formed his reflective self-identity such as cultural identity and ethnic Identity
through socialization process. These identities shape his thinking, emotions, and communication
pattems, so in order to understand a person and communicate with him we need to understand his
background as quoted by Nico Vink, "As social beings, we become ourselves in communicating with
others; b) Raju's negotiate himself by his anxieties. Anxiety can signal to individuals that a person poses
a threat to their enduring beliefs about themselves and lastly, c) Raju negotiate ha self-identity by linking
all of his identities to underlying concerns about competence and connectedness, or by imbuing the
different identities with a smilar affective tone. However, despite those identity negotiations of Raju he
was still be able to build up himself in a more positive and confident manner as Influenced by his
personal experiences in the family, school as threatened by his Director and his two

It is a widely accepted notion that ‘reel’ life is inspired by ‘real’ life events. 3 Idiots, a Bollywood
movie, is a prime example of one such movie. This movie is inspired by an Indian bestseller ‘5 point
someone’. 5 point someone is a groundbreaking novel authored by one of the most prominent Indian
author and youth icon Chetan Bhagat. This movie is about the academic pressure that is faced by the
youths in India. It is a highly pervasive and critical issue amongst the young people of India, as they
are always in conflict with a perpetual pressure that is applied by their parents, relatives, society and
competition to be successful. 3 Idiots is a cult satire on the Indian educational system. The
protagonists of this movie are 3 ‘idiot’ friends who struggle with their own unique matters while
enrolled in a top engineering college in India. It is indeed a revolutionary movie and has inspired wide
masses of youths. The movie "3 idiots" touches themes of friendship, following owns passion,
academic pressure and a faulty educational system.
The 3 main characters – Farhan Qureshi, Raju Rastogi and Rancchoddas ‘Rancho’ Shyamaldas
Chanchad, while all belonging to absolutely different backgrounds with different traits, share an
inseparable bond of friendship. Their friendship is honest, funny, emotional and silly. Throughout the
movie, the dean of the school Professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe ‘Virus’ makes constant but unsuccessful
efforts to break their unity. In one such attempt, Dean ‘Virus’ threatens to either expel Raju, who
belongs to a very poor family, or betray ‘Rancho’ by confessing to the Dean that ‘Rancho’ was indeed
the one who had urinated outside his house after they consumed alcohol and were having fun. Raju,
stuck in the dilemma of choosing between his family and his best friend jumps from the office window
but does not betray Rancho. At one instance, Farhan says, “It hurts when a friend fails in the exam,
but hurts even more when he tops the class.”(3 Idiots; Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi) This happens when
Rancho tops the class and rest of the two fail. This depicts the silliness and the always entertaining
connection the three friends shared.
The message that is the essence of the movie ‘3 Idiots’ is – Follow your passions to become successful
and more importantly happy in life. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer but his father
strongly and quite adamantly expects him to become an engineer because “the neighbor’s son is
earning so much because he is an engineer.”(3 Idiots; Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi) After a lot of conflicts
with his father, and following what Rancho tells him, Farhan decides to drop out of the engineering
college and pursues his passion of wildlife photography; eventually his father agrees as well. Years
later, after Farhan becomes a successful photographer, he quotes what Rancho always taught him,
“Make your Passion into your Profession, then your Work will become Play.” (3 Idiots; Rajkumar Hirani,
Abhijat Joshi)  Throughout the film, Rancho talks to Raju and Farhan about following their dreams and
not to surrender to the expectations the world has from them. This is certainly true as doing what the
worlds asks of you and not chasing what you like instead creates unnecessary pressure. This
eventually transforms into a burden and hinders the path to a happy and content life.
The issue of academic pressure been has been portrayed near perfectly in ‘3 Idiots’. The movie
shows all the different aspects of the gravity that is imposed upon the young minds. Raju’s family
conditions are shown to be very poor as his father is paralysed and mother works as a maid. He is
always in a constant pressure and distress of improving his family’s financial situation. That impacts
his academic standing negatively and he fails in his examinations. Farhan also succumbs to the
pressure imposed by his family and society and fails his examinations. Rancho tells his friends, “You
should dump all your fears or you’ll regret it on your deathbed." (3 Idiots; Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat
Joshi) Rancho's statement holds a lot of worth, as it is important to letting go of the fear for failure.
This demonstrates how academic pressure takes its toll on students and results in failure causing
embarrassment and dejection. There is pressure to compete from school; pressure of fulfilling parents'
expectations; pressure for financial stability and pressure of success from the society as failure is
considered a shame and insult.
3 Idiots is also a satire on the higher education system that exists in India. Rancho critically jokes
in one scene: "This is not a college; This is a pressure cooker." (3 Idiots; Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi) This
paints the picture of the persisting educational system in India that has no room for failure. At the
beginning of the movie, a student named Joy Lobo commits suicide by hanging himself in his
dormitory room as his project was given an 'F' grade by the Dean. This paints a sorry picture of the
persisting educational system in India that leaves no room for failure; if you fail, you are out. Every
year, thousands of students in the country commit suicide due to failure. The philosophy of Indian
educational system is - Life is a race, run fast or get trampled, as commented by Dean 'Virus'. In one
scene Rancho says, "Learning is not memorizing the exact words from the book. It is understanding
the book and being able to explain it in your own words." (3 Idiots; Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi)  This
stands true for the fact that educational institutions in India grade the students on how accurate their
book knowledge is. Hence, students focus more on cramming the book word to word, instead of
focusing on the understanding of the text.
3 Idiots was a complete entertainer, which kept me engrossed throughout. This movie not only
questions the education system but also the situation the young people of India are faced with. It is
time for our educators to wake up and make a drastic change. This should involve transforming from
the top to bottom; from the education ministry to the teachers who teach. It is also about time that
parents realize the pressure that is being imposed on their children academically can ruin their lives.
Success is not measured by how much money one has earned. Success is measured by how happy
and satisfied one is with their professional life. Professional satisfaction leads to personal happiness,
which is the end goal of life.
