INTRODUCTION
The Education Development Center, in partnership with USAID, hosted HERO for Youth in different
areas of the country. The Opportunity 2.0's Program HERO for Youth in particular, aims to give second
chances to the OSY in the 4 E’s areas (Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Engagement).
Bicol University, one of the host universities in the pilot city-Legazpi City, conducted HERO for Youth
in coordination with EDC and USAID. The said university held a week-long training for the HERO
Volunteers that took place last May 23-27, 2022. The HERO for Youth consists of two programs: HERO
for SHS and HERO for Upskilling Multiskilling.
On June 13–17, 2022, the implementation of HERO for Youth commences at Bicol University. The
first day focuses on the overview of the Program Opportunity 2.0 and groups the OSY into their
designated program to attend in the succeeding days and their squad assignment. In Squad 4, three
HERO Volunteers cater to a total of 15 ALS Completers who are enrolled in SHS. The narrative of events
from Day 1-3 of Squad 4 is stated in the succeeding parts.

II. NARRATIVES OF EVENTS

A. Training for the Pathways Orientation for the Youth - (June 13, 2022)
Day 1 of HERO Youth Implementation in Bicol University happened last June 13,
2022, at two locations; the BUCAL Amphitheater and rooms in assigned rooms for a
breakout session. The squad volunteers lead the breakout session catering to
approximately 20 OSY participants. Squad 4 for HERO for SHS, namely: Añonuevo,
Rivero, and Magdasoc, caters to a total of 15 ALS learners on Day 1. The breakout
session handled by the three volunteers starts at 9:45 with registration, followed by
invocation and self-introduction. Both the participants and the volunteers had the
opportunity to get to know one another. The ALS students next completed Activity 2
under the direction of their facilitators. Everyone in the room got to know one another
better as the activity progressed and revealed their individual life goals. Participants
were requested to share their #YOLO and #SanaAll artworks. Everyone's goals and the
steps they are taking to get there are revealed via this sharing. Someone wants to major
in psychology to fulfill a childhood ambition, someone wants to be a professional
basketball player to keep doing what makes him happy, and someone wants to major in
engineering to challenge how others see him. The sharing sheds light on the desires of
our Ka-HEROs, the motivations behind those desires, and the abilities required to realize
those desires. Goal-setting and encouragement were the main topics of conversation on
Day 1. On our end, we are tasked with providing guidance and a source of hope for
them, to encourage and enlighten them about the other path they can take to achieve
those dreams. When plan A fails, you start making plan B, C, D, and so on. And that
giving up has never been an option for those who dream and persevere. That second
chance can be just as sweet, and you can still achieve your ultimate a second time
around.
