Movie Analysis - 3 Idiots

It's not that 3 Idiots is a flawless work of art. But it is a vital, inspiring and life-revising work of
contemporary art with some heart imbued into every part. In a country where students are driven
to suicide by their impossible curriculum, 3 Idiots provides hope. Maybe cinema can't save lives.
But cinema, sure as hell, can make you feel life is worth living.

Learning

learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior or knowledge that results from experience.
In contrast to the innate behaviors discussed above, learning involves acquiring knowledge and
skills through experience.

Characteristics of learning
Learning is the process by which one acquires, ingests, and stores or accepts information. The
main characteristic of learning that; it is a process of obtaining knowledge to change human
behavior through interaction, practice, and experience. Our experiences with learned information
compose our bodies of knowledge.
Learning theories
Let’s start with a quick learning theories definition. Learning theories are different sets of
principles that explain how individual brains process learning.
There is 4common learning theories
 Behaviorism
 Cognitivism
 Constructivism
 Humanism
Behaviorism
The behaviorism learning theory was largely influenced by psychologist B.F. Skinner. This
theory suggests that we learn behaviors through external forces rather than internal forces.
Things like repeated actions, rewards, and punishments are ultimately what shape our learning.

Cognitivism
The cognitive learning theory focuses on thought or cognition. It’s based on the ideas of
psychologist Jean Piaget — particularly what he called schemas, which are ways we organize
information and knowledge. Piaget referred to schemas as the building blocks of intelligent
behavior.
Constructivism
Think about the root word of this learning theory: construct. That’s a great starting point for this
educational theory, which asserts that knowledge is constructed. It builds on itself, as you use
previous experiences and information to shape how you perceive and use new knowledge. That
means learning is highly individualized.
Humanism
1

The humanistic learning theory says that learning is a way for us to fulfill our full potential. As
learners, self-actualization is our ultimate goal. So, this theory focuses on the whole person and
not just cognitive needs or specific learning targets.
Lesson that’s we learn from 3 Idiots
1# Don’t follow success, follow excellence; success will follow
Throughout the story, Rancho is telling his friends that don’t chase success. But achieve
excellence and success will come to you itself.
But unfortunately, we only want success and don’t focus on excellence because it demands hard
work, commitment, and passion. Once you are focusing more on excellence, no wonder, success
will follow.
2# All is well
His well-known phrase, all is well, was a synonym for relaxing in a time of difficulty. He always
chants this mantra whenever he is nervous. He also suggests it to his friends to follow it. As it
gives an immediate psychological relaxation to his heart and mind to cope with the hard times
bravely.
This tells us that nothing is bad or fearful unless we make it so. If we are psychologically strong,
we can easily face and ward off any critical situation in life. But we have to remind ourselves
that ‘All is Well’.
3# Learning is everywhere
Rancho’s only goal was learning, so he always tried to find learning everywhere. He would
recommend to his friends that learning is everywhere. Just focus and the entire world is teaching
something.
It happens in the film that a poor child expressed his wish to Rancho that he wants to study but
can’t afford it because of his poverty. Rancho said to him that learning doesn’t require money. It
requires your willpower to move on and learn it somewhere else.
He further told the boy that poverty should not hinder his learning. Just buy a uniform, go to a
school, and learn. If they catch you, change your uniform and change school. When the city’s
schools end, ride a train and start in other schools in other cities.
4# Learn concepts and apply them
Racho often tells us that do not learn by rote. Learn by heart and whatever you like will be easy
to learn. Apply it to your life and practice it to change your and others’ lives.
5# Have some idiot friends around
He tells us to have some idiot friends around us. He calls idiots to those people who can think out
of the box and can go against the set traditions. If you have such friends who follow their hearts,
ambitions and strive for excellence, you are in excellent company.
1

So, have friends that give you visions and inspire you to follow your dreams.
6# Try it and take the risk
Rancho often tells us that take the risk because it gives you an unknown thrill, even if you fail.
And there is nothing worse than failure. But failure is nothing if you have the guts to move on.
What I Learned from Ranchu is failure is not the real problem but not trying is a significant
problem.
If you try and fail, at least you will learn something. If you don’t take risks and try, you won’t
know you could have done it.

Motivation
Psychologists define motivation as the process by which activities are started, directed, and
sustained so that certain needs are met.
Motivational theories
There have been numerous theories of motivation in psychology, including Maslow’s Hierarchy
of Needs, classical and operant conditioning, incentive motivation, and even Expectancy Theory.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs essentially focuses on a range of factors that may push somebody
to pursue a certain task or goal, from physiological needs like basic food, water, and shelter, to
social acceptance.
Classical and Operant Conditioning focuses on which stimuli, either environmental or
physical, will cause the greatest motivation for an individual.
Incentive Motivation is most focused on reinforcement. When a person has positive or negative
reinforcement, it will affect how motivated they are to continue with a task or do something
different the next time.
With Expectancy Theory, there are three essential components, including expectancy,
instrumentality, and balance, that help to determine how a person might behave in a given
situation based on past experiences.

These are some Motivation’s from 3 idiots movie

3 idiots movie Motivation: We must build a strong bond with our friends: Where Farhan
was on a flight and suddenly, he receives a call and then without having a second thought he was
out of the plane. He called his friend, hop in a taxi to pick him up, and went to “Imperial college
of engineering (ICE) where they were expecting their friend, Rancho
But it turned out to be Silencer (Chatur) who was waiting for them for the stupid bet which took
10 years back on teacher’s day sept 5 on the college terrace. It was a disappointment for them
but they got to meet their friend who was living in Shimla.
1

This scene was funny, precious, and proves that years don’t matter if you are connected with
hearts, with bonds and with the love you share with each other.
3 idiots movie Motivation: We must have never died attitude: Then “joy” was appeared in
the movie, he was a dropout student and was the first engineer from his village, his father was so
proud of him but virus didn’t approve his project because he was trying something different. He
was trying to make one drone which virus thought would never work. saari umar hum mar
mar ke jiliye ek pal to ab hume jeene do jeene do…… the drone was fixed by Rancho with a
camera on top and it was flying too, but he was late and “joy” committed suicide.
This scene taught us not to give up easily, we can create the best out of waste and should have
faith in ourselves. We must have a “never die attitude”. His father was in pain and only sorrow
was left.
3 idiots movie Motivation: We must follow our dream: Rancho was teaching the way of
learning to everyone in the college, he taught his teachers a lesson not to just cram everything but
to understand the fact and logic behind it. If they are studying induction motor then not by just
going through the definition, they should know about it practically.
Farhan wanted to become a wildlife photographer but because of family pressure, he was doing
engineering. After he got an internship offer in photography, he asked his father to let him follow
his dream but his father denied it because of social pressure or an unsecured future. Those were
some slots that make us think that we need to do what we want. What others think about our
decision is immaterial.
Personality
Personality can be defined as the distinctive and characteristic patterns of thought, emotion and
behavior that make up an individual’s personal style of interacting with the physical and social
environment.
Different personality traits
The five broad personality traits described by the theory are extraversion (also often spelled
extroversion), agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism. Trait theories of
personality have long attempted to pin down exactly how many personality traits exist.
Personality Theories
MBTI
The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator is a self-report inventory designed to identify a
person's personality type, strengths, and preferences. The questionnaire was developed by Isabel
Myers and her mother Katherine Briggs based on their work with Carl Jung's theory of
personality types. Today, the MBTI inventory is one of the most widely used psychological
instruments in the world.
The MBTI Types

Each type is then listed by its four-letter code:

 ISTJ - The Inspector
 ISTP - The Crafter
 ISFJ - The Protector
 ISFP - The Artist
 INFJ - The Advocate
 INFP - The Mediator
 INTJ - The Architect
 INTP - The Thinker
 ESTP - The Persuader
 ESTJ - The Director
 ESFP - The Performer
 ESFJ - The Caregiver
 ENFP - The Champion
 ENFJ - The Giver
 ENTP - The Debater
 ENTJ - The Commander
BIG-5
The "big five" are broad categories of personality traits. While there is a significant body of
literature supporting this five-factor model of personality, researchers don't always agree on the
exact labels for each dimension.
The following personality traits are discussed by using MBTI, TYPE A, TYPE B and BIG FIVE
MODEL of Organizational behavior in the context of a movie called 3 idiots.

Reasons: The MBTI score of Aamir Khan in the movie is ENTP because he is Quick, ingenious,
stimulating, alert, and outspoken. He is resourceful in solving new and challenging problems,
Adept at generating conceptual possibilities and then analyzing them strategically. He is also
good at reading other people and bored by routine, will seldom do the same thing the same way,
apt to turn to one new interest after another in machines, focus on the here-and-now,
spontaneous, enjoy each moment that he can be active with others and learn best through doing.
This can be justified at any stage of the film because he always chooses to go for innovating new
machines and developing an ideology that is error free.
The MBTI score of Kareena Kapoor in the movie is ESFP because she is Outgoing, friendly,
and accepting. She enjoys working with others to make things happen. Bring common sense and
a realistic approach to their work, and make work fun. Flexible and spontaneous, adapt readily to
new people and environments. Learn best by trying a new skill with other people. Since she is a
doctor in the film the character reflects that she is friendly, outgoing at any stage. This can be
justified at any state of the movie from her sister’s marriage to the climax shoot.
The MBTI score of R.Madhavan in the movie is ESTP because he is stimulating, alert, and
outspoken. Resourceful in solving new and challenging problems. He is good at reading other
people and bored by routine, will seldom do the same thing the same way, apt to turn to one new
interest after another. The personality trait of Madhavan is kind of flip flop in his character. At
the starting of the story, he joins the Imperial College for the sake of his dad’s wish and will not
reveal his zeal in wild life photography. But by the end of the story, he reveals that he is not at all
interested in doing a job that a normal engineer does.
The MBTI score of Sharman Joshi in the movie is ENFJ because he is Warm, empathetic,
responsive, and responsible. Highly attuned to the emotions, needs, and motivations of others.
Find potential in everyone, want to help others fulfill their potential. May act as catalysts for
individual and group growth. Loyal, responsive to praise and criticism. Sociable, facilitate others
in a group. The explanation can be justified from many parts of the movie i.e., he is highly
attuned emotions can be justified when he moves emotionally when Aamir Khan joins his father
in the hospital and when Virus resituates him from his college. He is loyal and responsive when
Virus asks him to reveal who are with him the last night.
The MBTI score of Boman Irani in the movie is ISTJ because he is Quiet, serious, earn success
by thoroughness and dependability. Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic, and responsible. Decide
logically what should be done and work toward it steadily, regardless of distractions. Take
pleasure in making everything orderly and organized – their work, their home, their life. Value
traditions and loyalty. The explanation can be justified at any stage of the story.
The MBTI score of Omi Vaidya in the movie is ISTJ because he is serious, earn success by
thoroughness and dependability. Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic, and responsible. Decide
