"If you follow your passion, success will follow you".
We all have heard this quote from 3 idiot movie. The movie is a coming-age satire on our education system which pressurizes students under the social norms of our parents for high grades. The movie sends a strong message to the system's weak pillars of traditional rote learning. The movie was a broad criticism of how the purpose of education in India has been reduced to preparing students for a rat race to acquire a job that pays them six figures per month. The story of the film is similar on many accounts to the bestseller novel "Five Point Someone" by Chetan Bhagat. The character of the movie Rancho (Aamir Khan) is a bright student motivating his friends to pursue their passion. Second lead of the film Farhan (R.Madhavan) comes from a normal middle-class family with a strict father. He was forced to pursue engineering instead of wildlife photography. Similarly, third lead of the film Raju (Sharman Joshi) is pursuing engineering intending to get his family out of extreme poverty. Viru Sahastrabuddhe aka Virus (Boman Irani) is a strict college director who is highly competitive. Pia (Kareena Kapoor) a doctor by profession plays the role of Boman Irani's daughter. The first half of the film is filled with intelligent comedy scenes, suspense, and motivation. Story and direction are flawless as it is expected from Rajkumar Hirani, one of the leading directors of Indian cinema. The film runs into 2 parallel dramas, one is present and the other 10 years old. The movie begins with the entry of all 3 lead actors into India's elite engineering college. The movie starts with mandatory ragging sessions where the leader of the gang mistakenly electrocutes himself by an instant device created by Rancho. After this Rancho starts leading his friends towards excellence, not a success, questioning authority, inventing, experimenting, and most essential following your heart's calling. The ragging sequence, Omi's chamatkar/balatkar speech, the virus’s daughter wedding crasher sequence, their melancholy supper with Raju's mournful mother, and Rancho's several demos to explain how Kareena has selected the wrong partner for herself almost have you rolling in the aisle. Add in the film's deep emotional core, which tugs at your heartstrings every now and again, and you have a near-perfect score. The second half of the movie shows some parts which are far-fetched like the child-birth sequence using a homemade device. However, the reunion of all friends depicts the strong bond between the friends through thick n thin. Overall, the movie is a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
