Carol Lombardini
President of the AMPTP
Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers
15301 Ventura Blvd Bldg E
Sherman Oaks, CA 91403-5885
VIA EMAIL
Dear Carol,
We, the undersigned film and television producers and allied members of the entertainment
community (in the attachment), call upon you and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television
Producers (AMPTP) to remove the word "Producers" from your official title.
As the AMPTP primarily represents major studios, networks and streaming platforms, the
inclusion of "Producers" in your name inaccurately implies that all producers are part of this
organization. No producers below are members, have been asked to become members or
receive benefits from such a membership. Yet, these individuals “produce” Hollywood’s film and
television content.
While the "P" in AMPTP stands for ‘producers’, the use of the word ‘producers’ as a term is left
over from a long-gone era when all film producers were employed by the studios. This usage no
longer reflects the relationship between studios and producers, nor does the AMPTP represent
the interests of producers or the work producers do in the current screen industry.
AMPTP member companies are studios, distributors, and financiers. And while such companies
may technically ‘produce’ film and television in the verb definition of the word, the noun
producer reflects a job and role on a film and television crew that is not what the AMPTP
member companies or their employees do.
During the recent and continuing trade strikes, the AMPTP has unjustly lumped producers into
the organization’s positions, point of view and representations to the press and public.
Producers are not formally aligned with either the AMPTP or the striking unions and should not
be represented as such.
Due to these misrepresentations, your negotiations have led to confusion within the industry
and beyond. These factors negatively affect producers in multiple ways beyond their control.
The word "Producers" within the AMPTP's name may have historical value to your organization,
but that doesn’t make it accurate or relevant today. We, therefore, advocate for the removal or
replacement of "Producers" from the AMPTP's name to 1) accurately represent your
membership (companies) and to 2) accurately reflect the fact that we, the undersigned, are not
a part of it.
We sincerely urge the AMPTP to proactively recognize the unique struggles faced by working
producers by not causing harm to those who choose to pursue this career path.
Sincerely,
Motion Picture and Television Producers and other allied industry professionals
