Nightingale defies the

Nightingale is given the
responsibility of leading a group of
CRIMEAN WAR nurses to care for British soldiers
who have been injured at the
military hospitals in Scutari,
Turkey, as the Crimean War gets
started.

Nightingale and her group


put forth a lot of effort to 1854-1856
make the hospitals more CRIMEAN WAR
hygienic during the Crimean
War, which significantly
lowers the mortality rate
for troops who are injured.

1855
Nightingale contracts
"Crimean fever" and
becomes critically ill, but
CRIMEAN WAR she recovers.

1860
The Nightingale Training
School for Nurses is founded
by Florence Nightingale at St.
Thomas' Hospital in London,
TRAINING SCHOOL
establishing the groundwork
for contemporary nursing
education.

1861
She releases "Notes on
Nursing," a ground-breaking
book outlining her nursing

Nightingale receives the
Royal Red Cross from
