How to Study Spelling Words

Say the word aloud

As you say the word, think about what the word
means.

Look for word parts you know

Do you see any prefixes, suffixes, or vowel sounds
you know? Where are the syllable breaks?

Spell the word aloud

Look at each letter in the word as you spell it aloud.

Write the word

Try not to look at the word while writing it. Think
about what you remember seeing and hearing.

Check the word

If you spelled the word correctly, move on. If you
misspelled the word, repeat the steps.
