Brownie Fractions
Sharing Brownies – A Mixed Fraction Lesson
Brownie Fractions is a problem-solving activity that uses ‘real life’ when it
comes to sharing. Students figure out how to split “brownies” with friends.
Fractions and whole numbers (mixed numbers) are used in this lesson/activity.
Students should have some understanding of fractions before you begin this
lesson. Brown construction paper is used to produce “brownies”. It might be
fun to use real brownies for one of the brownie problems.
• Introduce Activity Using:
• brown construction paper, cut the same size. (Use 8x12 piece of
construction paper to cut into eighths for students to use as their
“brownies” to practice cutting brownies.)
• Scissors for students
• To begin the lesson, call two students to the front of the classroom.
• Ask the class, “If I give these two students only one brownie to share, how
will they be able to share it getting the exact same size each?”
• Students should respond by, “splitting it in half or cutting it into two.”
• Demonstrate by cutting the construction paper brownie in half and giving
each student ½ of the brownie. Ask if the brownie can be split in half
another way to make two equal pieces? (Brownie examples for cutting in half)
