FOREWORD
Our world is fast changing and the only way for us to cope with these changes
is to understand it. This module on The Contemporary World aims to analyze the
phenomenon of globalization from different perspectives. This uses the conceptual
tools of various disciplines of social sciences to unpack the complex processes of
globalization and its manifestations to Philippines.

This course module is divided into six units. Each unit explains an important
aspect of globalization. Unit 1 explores the different definitions of globalization. Unit
2 discusses the structures that comprise globalization. Unit 3 aims to assess the
impact of globalization in different regions of the world while Unit 4 describes its
cultural aspect. Unit 5 explores the relationship of globalization to constructs such
as population, migration, and urbanization. Lastly, Unit 6 posts the challenges of
sustainable development and explains the roles of the global citizens to the
contemporary world.

Each unit has a concise discussion of the topic and different types of
assessment to track students’ achievement of the intended learning outcomes. This
course module also follows the principles of self-regulated learning that allow the
students to accomplish the tasks on their own pace with the necessary guidance and
support system.
