Assignment # 6: Rolle’s Theorem, MVT and Series Inst.: Manoj K. Rajpoot

Rolle’s Theorem, Lagrange and Cauchy Mean Value Theorems:

1. Using the mean value theorem (MVT) establish the following:

(i) ex ≥ 1 + x, for all x ∈ R.

x−1
(ii) x < ln x < x − 1, for x > 1.

2. Let f : (−1, 1) → R be twice differentiable function. Suppose f (1/n) = 0 for all n ∈ N,

0 00
then show that f (0) = f (0) = 0.

3. An athlete runs continuously a eight kilometers course in 40 minutes. Prove that, some-
where in the the course, athlete must have covered a distance of one kilometer in exactly
5 minutes.

4. Let f : [a, b] → R be differentiable and a ≥ 0. Using Cauchy mean value theorem, show
that there exist c1 , c2 ∈ (a, b) such that
0 0
f (c1 ) f (c2 )
=
a+b 2c2

 Series:
P∞ P∞ an
1. Suppose an ≥ 0 for all n, then prove that both the series n=1 an and n=1 an +1 converge
or diverge together.

2. Discuss the convergence (or divergence) of the following series:

P∞ 1
(i) n=1 1 − n sin n
P∞ 1 1
(ii) n=1 n log(1 + n )
P∞ nn−2
(iii) n=1 en n!
P∞ −n−(−1)n
(iv) n=1 2

3. Suppose (an ) be a decreasing sequence suchPthat an ≥ 0 and limn→∞ an = 0. Let bn =

a1 +a2 +. . . +an
n for all n ∈ N, then show that ∞ n
n=2 (−1) bn converges.

4. Discuss whether the following series converge or diverge:
