Oceans~
The moon? We happen to know a lot about the moon. What about the stars? We even know how
stars are created. What about the oceans, our very own planet? Not as much as you would think. We
know more about the darkside of the moon than our own oceans. Only about 5% of our oceans are
charted. We should have an Earth-Centric Focus. Understanding our own planet could be crucial to
addressing our own environmental problems and climate challenges. Exploration has us learn Earth’s
processes and can directly affect us. Ocean research also has immediate benefits. It will aid in the
accuracy of our weather predictions and protect coastal communities from natural disasters.

Oceans are also teaming with life. Isn’t that what we are always looking for in space? Studying
life in our oceans could improve our pharmaceuticals. According to “Mars can Wait. Oceans Can’t” “A
recent Japanese study led to the drug Erbulin, a drug derived from sea sponges, is effective in combatting
breast, colon, and urinary cancer” (page 212). Ocean exploration is also often more cost effective
