1.1: Statistical thinking, classes of variables and types of samples (Value: 35 points)

Instructions: In this assignment, you will work with the different concepts of statistics. You will
have the opportunity to explain these basic concepts and describe the various types of sampling.
You must read the required module resources (sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 7.8 of the
textbook) to complete the following exercises, which will be used to assess your learning.

Solve the exercises below according to the instructions provided for each one.

Part I

1) Statistics is said to be a science that is applied in many areas such as social sciences,
medicine, accounting, economics, finance, marketing and information systems, among
others. Explain and present an example of how statistics are used in the accounting
area. You can use the Virtual Library databases to obtain information on this subject.

Statistics is the science in charge of processing data efficiently, it also summarizes


information and quantity of data.

Examples: Is able to analyze data on the rising cost of living.


Statistics when quantified in accounting can foresee future events based on statistical
calculations and can analyze the cost by which a product or products may increase.
Part II -Population

1) We define population as the complete set of all individuals, things or events to be


investigated with respect to a particular situation. We define the sample as a subset of
the population. Based on the concepts of population and sample; and from what you
studied in the first module, establish a population and a sample that relate to the topic of
the November 2020 elections. Below is an example related to NUC students so that you
are clear on what you are going to do in this exercise. (4 points)

Example:

Population: all NUC students from the Bayamon Campus Sample: NUC students from the
Bayamon Campus of the Criminal Justice Program.

In terms of population, it may hold a record for the number of people living in Puerto Rico
who can go to the polls to vote in the 2020 elections.

Part III- Types of variables

1) Identify in each case whether it is a qualitative, continuous quantitative or discrete


quantitative variable. (6 points)

Part IV- Measurement scale

1)Determine which of the four levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio) is used
in each situation. (10 points)

a) A well-known writer rated the movie Harry Potter with 5 stars on a 5-star scale. ORDINAL.

b) Blood lead levels (low, medium and high) are used to describe subjects under medical study.

c) Body temperatures (in degrees Fahrenheit) of persons diagnosed with influenza were

Part V- Types of sampling

1) Determine one advantage and one disadvantage of the statistic sampling. You can use
the Virtual Library databases to obtain information on this subject. (4 points)
AN ADVANTAGE IS THAT THERE IS LESS VARIANCE IF A DEEPER
STRATIFICATION IS DONE WITH ELEMENTS THAT ARE SIMILAR TO EACH
OTHER.

A DISADVANTAGE IS THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO CARRY OUT A MORE


THOROUGH CERTIFICATION, AS A RESULT OF WHICH IT WOULD TAKE
MORE TIME TO COMPLETE.

Part VI-Types of Sampling (Definitions from Anderson et al. 2019)

1) In each of the following exercises, identify the type of sampling referred to in the
premise: random, systematic, convenience, stratified or clustered: (6 points)

a) The elements of the population are first divided into separate groups, called clusters.

b) One procedure for selecting a sample is to choose the elements for the sample one at a time,
so that each of the elements remaining in the population has the same probability of being
