Introduction

In chemical processes, performing material balance calculations is of profound

significance in tracking the input and output streams in a system and ensuring that the concept of
law of conservation of mass is being considered and employed. Toledo (2007) emphasized that
carrying out such calculations is useful in specifying the compositions of desired raw materials
from input materials and upon subjecting them to several unit processes, and eventually assessing
the production yield and operational efficiency of the processes used.

Among the several computational software programs for performing material balances,
spreadsheet programs, such as Microsoft Excel, are one of the most widely used because of their
non-complex navigation and data organization capabilities. In the study by Medina and Sanchez
(2020), it was mentioned that the use of spreadsheets in evaluating material balances can aid in
flexible writing of sets of equations or formulas since data can be taken from other specified cells,
and modified formulas can generate instant results, which is useful for efficiently analyzing the
variables used in the process.

This computational laboratory experiment aims to provide familiarity with formatting of

cells and entering formulas in Microsoft Excel, along with the application of matrix functions to
perform material balances on non-reactive processes, focusing on gas absorption, leaching, and
distillation processes.
