Small Group Mini Lesson


How to be a good listener
Step 1
Hearing
Using your ears,
acknowledging that you are
recognizing sound.

Directions

● Each staff member will stand on every wall in the room with
3 items in their hand.

● Participants will close their eyes.

● Staff will take turns making a loud noise with one of the
objects.

● Participants will then point to the direction they hear the


noise from.

Directions

● Participants will sit in a circle.

● There will be a list of question on the board.


○ Ex. “What is your favorite…?”

● There will be one talking ball. Only the person holding


the talking ball can talk and answer a question on the
board.

● When they are done answering a question they will pass


it to someone else in the circle.
“Woooo” or “Booo”

Are you listening to what we
are saying?
Directions

● Staff will read off a list of statements.

● If it is a good statement you will cheer and say “Whoo”


○ Ex. Staff: “Ice cream for dinner”
Participants: “Whooo”

● If it is a bad statement you will say “Booo”


○ Ex. Staff: “Only broccoli for dinner”
Participants: “Booo”

Activity 3
Can you draw what you hear
from a story?
Directions

● A staff member will read a story to the participants.

● Make sure all participants have a box of crayons and a piece


of paper.

● Slowly read the story. As you tell the story the particiaptns
will draw what they hear.
○ Ex. “There was a blue bird sitting in a tree.”

● At the end compare all of your drawings.
