Issues

7.1. Make a list naming at least 11 products for masking.

• Paper.
• Plastic film.
• Blankets.
• Wheel covers.
• Masking tape.
• Weatherstripping.
• Weatherstripping of glazing beads.
• Tapes for moldings.
• Liquid products.
• Protective film.
• Protective covers for seats and steering wheels.

7.2. List at least 6 characteristics that masking paper should have.

• Resistance to solvents.
• Be impervious to sanding water.
• To present a density, sufficiently compact, to avoid being crossed by the pressure of the paint in
the application.
• It must have sufficient strength to withstand handling.
• Easy to adapt to different contours.
• It will not have loose fibers on the surface that can be detached.
• Provide a smooth surface to avoid dust accumulation.

7.3. Define what plastic film sheets are.

These are plastic sheets of different sizes used to cover different parts of the vehicle or even its entirety.

7.4. Write down at least 7 characteristics that the plastic film must have.

• The plastic is solvent resistant.

• They are easy to install.
• They adhere to vehicle parts.
• They withstand drying temperatures, including infrared.
• They are biodegradable.
• Its reuse is conditioned by the cuts made and by the damage. caused.
• Withstands sanding with water without deformation.
• They have distinctive motifs or colors to identify the inner side from the outer side.

7.5. Define what masking tapes are.

It is a self-adhesive tape used for outlining contours and fixing masking material. It is presented in rolls of
different widths.

7.6. Indicate what is known as light masking weatherstripping and what it is used for.

They are polyester foam cords of circular or elliptical section with different diameters. They are used for
masking door openings (lights), gas filler cap, trunk, etc. They are used to prevent spray or dust from
entering the inside of the masked area and to prevent steps from appearing on the line where the
painting ends.

7.7. What is the name of the cord being assembled in the image below?

Junquillo

7.8. Indicate the name of the ribbon shown in the following image. Molding tape

7.9. How do I remove the peel-off lacquer?

Depending on the manufacturer, it is removed by pulling it off as if it were wallpaper, or simply by

washing the vehicle with water when the paint has hardened: the product completely melts and acts as if
it were soap.

7.10. When should the masking be removed?

Masking should be removed when evaporation is complete, before hardening; waiting too long may
cause the paint to become hard and solid, leaving a zippered edge line.

7.11. What is a cut line or masking edge?

The line where the boundary of the area to be masked in a cut application (cut painting) occurs.

7.12. What is the purpose of masking tape?

• To achieve a good fixation of the masking material to the vehicle.

• Allow it to peel off without damaging the paint.
• Do not leave adhesive residue when removed.
• Easy to apply, even in changes of direction, ensuring its adaptation.
• Withstand water sanding.
• Resist drying temperatures and solvents.

7.13. What are wheel covers called?

These special sleeves are equipped with a quick coupling system to the wheel to facilitate the assembly
and ensure its fixation during the whole painting process.

7.14. Indicate what a protective film is and what it is used for.

It is a thermo-reflective film designed to protect non-metallic elements from distortion and degradation
when subjected to excessive heat from infrared rays.

7.15. Describes the protections achieved by masking.

• In painting, to cover parts that are not going to be painted and may be sprayed by the products
used in the repair.
• When sanding, to avoid damaging adjacent parts when the repair is carried out on undismantled
body parts.
• When handling the vehicle in the workshop, so as not to stain the upholstery of the seats, floor
mats, steering wheel or gearshift.
• In drying, to prevent excessive heat from damaging plastics or rubber that are sensitive to high
drying temperatures.

7.16. Is masking done in manufacturing, why?

No, since the accessories have not yet been assembled in production.

7.17. List the products used for masking.

• Paper.
• Plastic film.
• Blankets.
• Wheel covers.
• Masking tape.
• Weatherstripping.
• Weatherstripping of glazing beads.
• Tapes for moldings.
• Liquid products.
• Protective film.
• Protective covers for seats and steering wheels.

7.18. Describes the characteristics that the paper used for masking in painting must have.

• Resistance to solvents.

• It will not have loose fibers on the surface that can be detached.
• Provide a smooth surface to avoid dust accumulation.
• It is supplied in sheets with different widths to adapt to the size of the pieces to be masked.

7.19. What is the fundamental difference between masking sleeves and masking films?

Its resistance and with it the possibility of reuse.

7.20. Write down the characteristics that the masking film must have.

• The plastic is solvent resistant.

• They are easy to install.
• They adhere to vehicle parts.

7.21. What are the main characteristics of masking tape?

• To achieve a good fixation of the masking material to the vehicle.

• Allow it to peel off without damaging the paint.
• It leaves no adhesive residue when removed.
• Easy to apply, even in changes of direction, ensuring its adaptation.
• Withstands water-based sanding.

7.22. Indicate the names of the parts shown in the figure on the tape:

7.23. What are masking weatherstrips?

They are polyester foam cords of circular or elliptical section with different diameters (12 to 27 mm),
used for masking door openings (lights), gas cap, trunk, etc. They are used to prevent spray or dust from
entering inside the masked area and to prevent steps from appearing on the line where the painting
ends.

7.24. What are weatherstrips used for?

To protect the glazing beads from spraying and to prevent seams from forming in the paint next to the
rubber.

7.25. What is peelable lacquer?

They are protective varnishes that are applied with spray guns. Once dried, they form a kind of thin skin,
capable of withstanding solvents and drying temperatures. Its removal is easy, since, depending on the
manufacturer, it is removed by pulling it off as if it were wallpaper, or simply by washing the vehicle with
water when the paint has hardened (the product melts completely and acts as if it were soap).

7.26. How are reed masking tapes formed?

These tapes are composed of an adhesive part that is protected by a thin plastic sheet and the other part
by a small reinforced plastic strip.

7.27. Is it necessary to clean the area to be masked, what for?

It is important to clean and degrease the area to be masked thoroughly to prevent the tape from peeling
off when working. It is also advisable to clean the vehicle thoroughly before starting work.

7.28. What is contouring performed for?

To facilitate the adjustment of the masking material and especially in areas where it is difficult to adjust
the tape and masking together.

7.29. What material should the spatulas used to insert the masking elements in narrow areas be made
of?

© Ediciones Paraninfo 6

Plastic so as not to damage the paint.

7.30. How do you prevent the tape from tending to lift in curves?

By slightly loosening the tension in these areas during placement.

7.31. Why is it advisable to remove the masking when evaporation is complete, before hardening?

To prevent the paint from hardening too much and leaving a zipper-like edge line when removed.

7.32. Why is it that when the plastic film is cut out, the entire contour of the part is left uncut?

A that can be used to introduce the excess film at one end of the piece and protect the inside with it.
