1 General
According to solve Navier-Stokes and energy equations in complex geometries, real situations, and non-ideal
conditions, it is needed to use numerical methods to solve the equations . There are plenty of softwares which are
available to solve these problems comprising Nastran, Comsol, Multiphysics and etc. One of which ANYSY FLUENT
stands among them and described here . Background knowledge of Fluids, Heat transfer and Numerical calculation is
needed to use this software.

2 Discretizing
In complex, real problems, it is needed to discretize the geometry and fluid/solid zone to firstly guess an initial value,
defining boundary and operating conditions and furthermore start to solve Navs and energy equations with numerical
methods such as Newton-Raphson method and Secant method to name but a few. ANSYS FLUENT is a finite element
solver which solves equations for each cell and its advantages outweigh finite difference method. Contrastingly, finite
difference method solves equations by using equations for differentiating among two cells.

3 Meshing
First of all, meshing should be made which can be done with GAMBIT(recommended), ANSYS meshing and ICEM .

4 choosing structured or unstructured meshing

Try your best to have medium square cells not rectangular

5 Boundary layer meshing

Depending on your geometry, boundary layer mesh varies.

6 Face meshing and zoning

7 Beginning the program

8 General setting
Here you can choose whether you are looking for transient solving or steady state answer. Gravity can be added as
operating condition. Moreover, it can be chosen that solver use density based or pressure based equations.

9 Models
9.1 Multiphase Model
Here you can choose if your problem is multiphase and model your versatile phases interactions and phase changes
such as boiling water and air.

9.2 Energy
If you want to solve energy equations or if you have phase change, heat transfer, or temperature difference you use
that model.

9.3 Viscous
Turn this mode on regarding to your problem to model the viscosity effect and turbulent.

9.4 Radiation
Use this for modeling radiative heat transfer.

9.5 Heat exchanger

It is used for heat transfer in heat exchangers such as shell and tube to calculate heat transfer efficiency.

9.6 Species
This model is used for combustions and chemical reactions such as burning and ignition.

9.7 Discrete phase

It is a FLUENT suggested model to simulate droplets or granules injections and molten metals injections.

9.8 Acoustics
This model gives the noise and acoustic wave created in instruments.

9.9 Structures
It is not suggested to be used to analyse structure stress. Use ABAQUS.

9.10 Electrical potential

Used for battery modeling and ferromagnetic fluids, Nano fluids and Ferro fluids.

10 Materials
10.1 Fluid
You can choose fluid, change characteristic of fluids such as density, conductivity or etc. in this part. Defining a user
designed fluid is also available.

10.2 Solid
You can choose solid, change characteristic of solids such as density, conductivity or etc in this part. Defining a user
designed fluid is also available.

11 Boundary Conditions
Here you choose boundary condition for your problem.

11.1 Wall
11.2 Pressure inlet/outlet
11.3 Mass flow inlet/outlet
11.4 Symmetry
By defining an axis, you can reduce your domain and run time in axisymmetric geometries.

12 Dynamic mesh
For problems such as moving valves, non-stationary walls you should put up FSI and dynamic mesh.

13 Methods
Here you chose your solver, degree of accuracy of equations for each equation discretizing order.

14 Controls
Here you can put up relaxation factors

15 Report definitions
User define important variables to be written in txt file after calculation in reports.

16 Plots
Similar to reports but in plot.

17 Cell register
To give initial values to such specific area of domain by defining it manually.

18 Initialization
To give initial values to defined zones.

19 Run calculation
Setting up time step and iterations and autosave settings.

20 Results
Seeing results in contours, streamlines, plots, vectors, path lines, particle tracking, animation and meshes.
