Biography Program
Konstantin Bozhinov, 14-course archlute
Konstantin Ruslanov Bozhinov, PhD (ABD), is a lute,
guitar, and accordion player, specializing in improvisation,
composition, and arranging. Based in Vancouver since 2006, he
enjoys a busy concert schedule as soloist, collaborator, and

He holds a Performance Diploma in Classical guitar Prelude
from Douglas College and a Bachelor of Music degree in guitar Allemande
and lute performance from the University of British Columbia, where he studied with Courante
Michael Strutt. At UBC Konstantin met his teacher and mentor - the historian, luthier, and Bourrée
performer Ray Nurse. Under his guidance Konstantin became the first student to study and Sarabande
major in the lute at UBC. Chaconne
Graduate studies include a Master of Music degree in lute performance from
McGill University, where he studied basso continuo with Hank Knox and French baroque Variations on ‘Une Jeune Fillette’ K. Bozhinov
lute, baroque guitar and archlute, under Sylvain Bergeron. He performed regularly with the
University Baroque orchestra and took part in opera productions. Suite in D minor K. Bozhinov
A PhD candidate in historical musicology at the University of Victoria, Konstantin Prelude
is an active researcher of Baroque performance practice, French opera, improvisation, and Allemande
compositional technique in the 18th century. Past guest-editor for the academic journal Courante
Musicological Explorations, Konstantin is also music critic for the Coastal Spectator, the Lute Bourrée
Society of America Quarterly, and contributor for Classical Voice North America. Sarabande
Konstantin is co-founder and former music director of the Renaissance group Gigue
Ensemble Musica Humana, with whom he toured Boston, Amherst, and Montreal. He was
also producer and audio engineer for the album Al Alba de España, which features his A set of Celtic tunes arr. K. Bozhinov and Alan Alexander
arrangements and reconstructions of Spanish Renaissance music. As part of the chamber A Toy
group Stile Moderno, Konstantin has given numerous recitals with violinist Arthur Neele Separation of Body and Soul
and gambist Natalie Mackie. O’Carolan’s quarrel with the landlady
Konstantin is the accordion instructor at Vancouver Community College with Cary Jane
recent performance highlights that include a tour of the Discovery Islands in BC (playing
accordion and lute), a series of concerts with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and
Les Barricades Mystérieuses François Couperin, arr. K. Bozhinov
collaboration with renowned baroque violinist Marc Destrubé. He also tours with Calgary
Philharmonic Orchestra principal cellist, Phil Hansen. As a specialist in improvisation,
Konstantin gives frequent recitals of his own baroque compositions. Suite in G minor K. Bozhinov

Individuality and originality through improvisation and composition are at the core of Allemande
Konstantin's philosophy and approach to music. In the words of Matsuo Basho: Courante
'Do not look for the footsteps of the ancient masters; seek what they sought.' Sarabande
