VISUALIZING THE
SETTING
GROUP 2
IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, THE UNDERWORLD, ALSO
KNOWN AS HADES OR THE REALM OF DEAD IS A
MYSTERIOUS AND GLOOMY PLACE WHERE SOULS
GO AFTER DEATH. IT IS RULED BY GOD HADES,
ALONGSIDE HIS QUEEN, PERSEPHONE.
ENTRANCE
The entrance to the
underworld is typically
depicted as a dark and
foreboding cave or a
river called the Styx.
The river Styx acts as a
boundary between the
living world and the
underworld, and it must
be crossed by souls to
reach Hades' realm.
• The Greek underworld is
GEOGRAPHY often described as a vast
and intricate network of
caverns and tunnels,
extending deep beneath
the earth. It consists of
different sections, such
as Tartarus, the Asphodel
Meadows, and the
Elysian Fields.
TARTARUS
Tartarus is the deepest
and darkest section of
the underworld, reserved
for the punishment of
villains and wicked
creatures. It is a place of
eternal torment, where
the most notorious
criminals, titans, and
other monstrous beings
are held captive.
ASPHODEL
MEADOWS
This is the section of the
underworld where the
majority of souls reside.
It is a neutral and dreary
place, where ordinary
souls wander aimlessly,
lacking any particular
pleasure or suffering. It
is neither a place of
reward nor punishment.
ELYSIAN
FIELDS
The Elysian Fields, also
known as the Isles of the
Blessed, is a portion of
the underworld reserved
for the souls of heroes,
demigods, and those
deemed righteous. It is a
place of eternal
happiness and bliss,
where the blessed souls
enjoy an idyllic
existence.
JUDGES AND
GUARDIANS
Before being assigned to
their respective sections,
souls in the underworld are
judged and assessed. The
three judges of the
underworld are
Rhadamanthus, Aeacus,
and Minos. They decide the
fate of souls based on their
deeds in life. Additionally,
Cerberus, a three-headed
dog, guards the entrance to
the underworld, preventing
the living from entering and
the dead from escaping.
FEATURES AND
DENIZENS
The Greek underworld is
inhabited by various
mythical creatures and
figures. These include
the Furies, who torment
souls in Tartarus, the
ferryman Charon, who
transports the deceased
across the river Styx,
and the shades, which
are the ghostly and
insubstantial forms of the
dead.
