The following data sheets apply to genuine SGB Cuplok Access scaffolding. The data has been calculated using a
3D computer model developed using the finite element structural package ANSYS. System imperfections,
inclinations, force coefficients and wind loads used in the model have been taken from the draft European code of
practice pr EN 12811:1998 and ENV 1993-1-1:1992. Three wind load cases have been considered.
Calculations have been carried out on a basic scaffold structure with 2m lifts, 2.5m x 1.3m bays, 8 bays long, with
every lift boarded. All verticals are grade 50c and the jacks are universal jacks with an average jack extension of
340mm (1/2 extension). The systems investigated were unsheeted, sheeted and netted, with 1 working lift, i.e. one
and a half loaded lifts in accordance with pr EN 12811:1998. All systems were considered with and without hop-up
brackets. In all cases either the system leg load capacities for both the inner and outer standards or the
average of the two must not be exceeded. Separate load tables are given for systems with and without foot ties.
When foot ties are not used, ledger bracing is required (see individual load tables for brace quantities required). For
unsheeted scaffolds data is given for systems both with and without plan bracing; for clad scaffolds plan bracing is
always required.
Data is given for the following configurations, in the form of maximum number of lifts (for a fully boarded scaffold),
maximum leg load and tie load data:
System Foot ties Plan Bracing Tie pattern Facade Openings Page ref.
With foot ties With plan bracing 4.0m
Unsheeted Without plan bracing 6.0m Open (o) p.56 - 68
All loads given are safe working loads following the requirements of pr EN 12811:1998.
For individual loading requirements the leg load capacities given in the tables may be used.
General requirements are given on pages 50 - 52 and must be followed.
Tables comparing the new data with previous data can be found on pages 86 - 88.
For all cases not mentioned in the data sheets, please contact your local SGB design office. It is permissible to
refer to 57 kN rating falsework leg loads, using external leg capacities when the structure is fully braced.

Loadings
The data on the following pages are calculated according to the conditions below.
1) Every lift is boarded with scaffold boards, and if hop-ups are used they are also on every lift. According to pr EN
12811:1998 if more than one level is provided with decking, an additional load of 50% must be taken to act at
the platform above or below the working platform, hence the system was loaded with one and a half loaded lifts.
2) Every lift is:- 2.0m x 2.5m bays and 1.3m wide; the leg load data may be used for smaller bay sizes but not for
larger bays. Platform loading is based on a loading area of 2.5m x 1.3m.
According to CP 3: Chapter V: Part 2 1990, the equivalent basic wind speed for the maximum wind pressure of 600
– 770 N/m2 ≡ 50 - 57m/s. This wind loading covers Scotland.
Dynamic pressure for maximum wind was calculated in accordance with CP 3: Chapter V: Part 2 1990 with the
basic wind speed of Vb = 46 m/s, covering the Manchester area, and with wind factors: S1 = 1, S2 = 0.6 at
ground level and S2 = 0.93 at a height of 24 m and S3 = 0.77.
Dynamic pressure for maximum wind was calculated in accordance with CP 3: Chapter V: Part 2 1990 with the
basic wind speed of Vb = 40 m/s, covering the London area, and with the wind factors the same as those used
for condition 2 above.
If the required platform loading is different from the above, the leg load data may be used to check the
requirements are within the system capacity (NOTE: the loading on the hop-up brackets must not exceed the
values stated above).

Loadings
6) No more than one loaded level of hop-up bracket is permitted between lifts at any one time. Only the 3 board
hop-up bracket may be used between lifts to satisfy the minimum width requirements for a working platform.
7) All verticals are grade 50c and all jacks are universal. If grade 43c verticals are used, the calculated leg loads
may be used but must be reduced by 30%.
8) Average jack extension is assumed to be at 1/2 extension. i.e. 340 mm. (Jack extension is the height from the
ground to the bottom of standard.)
9) Tie tubes must be connected to both inside and outside standard or ledger and within 300 mm of a node point
(see point 11 below). Right angle couplers must be used for the connection. On the end verticals the tie pattern
must be doubled unless a return in the building of at least 3 bays is present.
10) Tie loads normal and parallel to the facade are given for each system (+ compression force, - tensile force).
These forces do not need to be considered simultaneously. Note that for some cases tie loads differ at the base
/ plan brace location. Ties of appropriate ratings must be used.
11) If ties are only connected to inside standard or ledger, V-Ties must be used at a frequency of 1 in 5 bays. A
description of V-Ties can be found on page 83. V-Tie loading data are given in the tie loading tables on the
following pages.
12) For unsheeted scaffolds if a tie is removed for any reason the scaffold must be plan or ledger braced back to
adjacent ties (see figures 10 and 11). The maximum distance between braced ties is 7.5 m horizontally and 12
m vertically for an 8 m tie pattern, 7.5 m horizontally and 10 m vertically for a 6 m tie pattern, and 7.5 m
horizontally and 8 m vertically for a 4 m tie pattern. Assume load from missing tie is evenly distributed to
adjacent ties. Design ties to appropriate (higher) rating.
13) Ties must not be removed on sheeted / netted scaffolds unless plan and ledger bracing is used and tie loads
are checked. The maximum distance between braced ties is 5 m horizontally and 6 m vertically for 2 m and 4m
tie patterns.
14) Face bracing must be used in 1 bay in 8. At least 2 bays must be braced if the structure is greater than 4 bays.
Bracing in the end bays should be avoided.
15) A foot tied structure signifies that the first level of ledgers and transoms is positioned in the first cup on the
standards. Where foot ties are not used, standards must be ledger braced. See individual load tables for the
frequency of bracing required.
16) For clad scaffolds, plan bracing is required in every lift, at a frequency of 1 bay in 8. This may be positioned in
the same bay as the face bracing; bracing end bays should be avoided.
17) The loads given in the tables apply to scaffolds which are tied at the top. For unsheeted scaffolds the structure
may extend up to 2 lifts above the last tied level provided these lifts are ledger braced (see figure 9).
18) Sheeted and netted scaffolds must be tied at the top. On dismantling, remove sheets / netting before removing
ties.
19) For the 4m tie pattern, if the pattern is NOT staggered the leg load capacity must be reduced by 30%. All other
tie patterns MUST be staggered.
20) It is permissible to mix tie patterns in conjunction with unsheeted or sheeted structures providing the allowable
loads are not exceeded for each individual case. At the boundary height where the tie pattern changes the
lower tie pattern should extend two lifts into the next tie pattern zone.

21) For all configurations considered, the systems were analysed with wind loads both normal to the facade and
parallel to the facade, and for the working condition (i.e. working wind with 100% imposed loading) and the
maximum wind load condition (i.e. maximum wind with 50% imposed loading). The following key is applicable
to the tables which give the maximum number of lifts, and indicates which of the analysed conditions was the
critical case:
− Numbers underlined: system failure due to maximum wind condition (i.e. maximum wind with 50%
imposed load of 1.5 working lifts);
− Numbers not underlined: system failure due to working wind load condition (i.e. working wind with
100% imposed loading of 1.5 working lifts);
22) According to pr EN 12811:1998 force coefficients (cf) for a netted structure, where data from a wind tunnel test
are not available, should be taken as:
23) According to pr EN 12811:1998 force coefficients for a sheeted structure should be taken as:

In the absence of ties being fully connected to both standards, V-ties are required to give lateral (sideways) support
to the CUPLOK structure. This allows all other ties on the structure to be connected to the inside standard only.
A minimum of 1 V-tie per 5 bays is required for every lift containing ties.
e.g. a 12 bay structure will require 3 V-ties (12/5 = 2.4) for every lift containing ties.
The terms used to describe the tie forces given in the data sheets are further clarified as follows:
PLAN VIEW
FACADE
45.0°
Force in
normal tie
Force in V-Tie
at anchor.
45.0°
The V-ties are present to give sideways restraint to the structure. It is possible that this restraint may be provided
by another means, for example a scaffold corner return. In this case an engineering judgement should be made to
check that the scaffold corner return will provide an equivalent restraint to the V-tie. The V-ties may then be
replaced by the scaffold corner return, as shown below:
Normal tie

Loadings
The data sheets give allowable safe working loads that may be applied to a CUPLOK structure for various
situations depending on the basic wind and site location of the scaffold structure (according to CP 3: Chapter V:
Part 2 1990) the tie pattern, scaffold cladding and the presence of hop-up brackets.
The “leg load” is the load in the base leg of the structure resulting from the self weight of the scaffold and the
imposed load acting on the structure.
EXAMPLE CALCULATION
A CUPLOK maintenance structure with foot ties is required to the following specification;
Height = 22 m
Lift height = 2 m
Basic wind = 46 m/s (and assuming S1 = 1, S2 = 0.6 at ground level and S2 = 0.93 at a height of 24 m and S3 = 0.77)
Cladding = Unsheeted
Façade porosity = Closed
Fully boarded
One working platform loaded with 3 kN/m2
No hop-ups
Assume 2.5 m bay structure with scaffolds boards on the main deck.
The self weight per standard per lift of the structure is calculated as follows:
Outside Inside
2
Without Hop-ups 3.0 kN/m 4.875 kN 4.875 kN
© SGB CUPLOK7R.DOC
Loadings
The load data available gives the following options for this structure;
Therefore, either case may be used. Please refer to pages 50-51 for general rules which apply.
Case 1: For Case 1, ties in the base lift and at the plan brace location must be capable of carrying
(p 62, Table 2.3.) 1.2 kN in compression and tension normall to the facade and 1.0 kN parallel to the facade,
and all other ties must carry 1.2 kN in compression and tension normal to the facade and
0.5 kN parallel to the facade.
Case 2: For Case 2, ties in the base lift and at the plan brace location must be capable of carrying
(p 62, Table 2.4.) 1.4 kN in compression and tension normal to the facade and 1.3 kN parallel to the facade,
and all other ties must carry 1.4 kN in compression and tension normal to the facade and
0.7 kN parallel to the facade.
If ties are connected to inside standards only, V-ties must be used (see Tables 2.3 and 2.4 (p 62) for V-tie loading).
1
Note: If more than one level is provided with decking, an additional load of 50% must be taken to act at the platform above or below the
working platform (prEN12811 : 1998).
